For several years now, Dragonfly Forge has been offering formal, scheduled classes in swordsmithing taught by master swordsmith Michael Bell.

This year, in 2008, we announced and unveiled a new, larger, and better equipped shop, nearly four times larger than our previous smithy. With this new facility came the foundation of Tomboyama Nihonto Tanren Dojo (Dragonfly Mountain Japanese Sword Forging School).

Tomboyama Nihonto Tanren Dojo is the only school of its kind in the world, offering a variety of hands-on classes in the Japanese sword arts. Tomboyama Nihonto Tanren Dojo now has it own web domain, www.TomboYama.com, separate from our main website, www.DragonflyForge.com.

Our most popular course is our Basic Forging Course, a five-day course designed to give the student a working familiarity with the tools and metals utilized in the forging of a sword blade. Each student has the chance to forge his own blade of at least wakizashi length from forge-welded steel cable. Skills learned include forging, grinding, filing and heat-treating, with attendant emphasis on metallurgy and proper shaping and aesthetics. All tools, fuel, and material are included.

We also offer a five-day course covering the making of koshirae, as well as two-day weekend courses covering the making of habaki, tsuka-maki (handle-wrapping), and kajioshi (final shaping done by the swordsmith on water stones).

New for 2009, we will be conducting a a three-day seminar demonstrating the processes used to create and refine quality sword steel, known as oroshigane, from electrolytic sponge iron, denkaitetsu.

Our course schedule for 2009 is available here at the Tomboyama site..

I am happy to answer any questions anyone may have regarding our school, the classes, or anything else.
