      Alan,
I just finished reading  ( on a kindle that makes it easier for me to read)This Vast Enterprise By Craig Fehrman..... about Louis & Clark with added info he had found and speculated on.... it was an interesting read... and points of view from the native perspective ..... you know better than most how difficult retelling history is.... in the appendix there are photos ..one of them is of a pipe hawk that "Lewis owned at his death and was probably carried with him on the expedition.".... I must admit I do not know how to take a screen shot ( a sad comment on me I know) so I took a pic of it with my iPad from my laptop screen.... it is on page 389 in the book......
I do not buy the notion this  pipe hawk traveled with Lewis on the expedition ..... here is a pic ...
I think it is too pristine to have weathered 18 months on the trail.... what do you know about it ? I think it is a beauty and your versions are very much in line with the authentic of this ....     Dick

Oh ,yeah . Big peeve!  to many videos of Big guy smashing  with hand sledge hammer. Videos of half naked women smiths with gun on hip pounding steel. Its just so silly.when did people  decide that a fine piece of hand forged steel should look like a 3rd grade craft project? Its not bru de forge . I know , each to their own . Deep breath , let it out slowly. Ahhhh. All better.

Posting your location can make a difference in getting responses. It surprises mot people to find that there is usually a bladesmith/blacksmith nearby within easy driving distance. We just don't have time to stand at the end of the drive holding a sign and wave at folks passing by.
Being a charter member of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers' Guild and a long time member of the Knifemakers' Guild (national), I know quite a few makers. Seems the ones that enjoy working with fire are very amiable to having visitors, sharing their expertise, and enjoying a little company now and then.
So.....let folks know where you are, you might be surprised.
