The people around me know that I don't take myself very seriously, and that I'll do just about anything to make others smile. My organization shuts down for the year this afternoon, and I thought this might give our employees a chuckle. (My raging Yoda Christmas sweater and Santa hat today are also having that effect) I tend to unplug every year for a couple of weeks about this time. This is my take on a crisp and clean knife with a primitive look. Seems counter intelligent, but I had a friend ask for a chef knife made out of a rasp with a bone handle and a kinda primitive feel. This also came with the clarification that she meant no insult to my abilities, just likes bones and old creepy looking stuff. I told her I could do rustic, but wouldn't call it primitive. I forged the blade in an old three legged, hand crank coal forge. This was my first time forging with coal. It is definitely a whole diffrent animal than propane. I've been fighting with this knife for several days. As the title says, this is my first attempt at a chef knife with a hidden tang. The boster is the back end of a 20mm round. The handle is a piece of maple a friend gave me. I burnt it with a torch and finished it with some linseed oil. I tried to be fancy and tape off the edge and patina the spine black. I tried the mustard hamon first but it was very light. I think I need to leave it longer than an hour or try a lighter coat. I didnt like it so I sanded it off. I will try it again later. I think that's exactly what she asked for, and that you did yourself proud. I used a forge like that for years. They definitely take some getting used to. Well done!

Modest Germanic set from the first centuries of our era . Spear with one barb, a javelin and a knife. The spear has an eight-sided sleeve 25 cm, javelin is 17.5 cm and the whole knife is 23 cm. The handle of the knife is walnut. The sheath is made of leather, dyed with a decoction of oak, the lower fitting is made of bog oak. Entirely impregnated with boar fat.

Its some black patina I bought from Amazon a while back. It mixes 9 to 1 with water and starts working immediately. I let blades sit for 5 minutes. I taped this knife and cut out the design before the patina.

Thanks guys! The last picture is as it sits right now. I'm done messing with it and I'm moving on to the next knife.

I'm a bit confused...the last picture looks AWESOME!!! (and those who know me well know I don't like or use superlatives very much) Is this the later try? If not, IMO you should leave it as is....

Here's something I sent off yesterday a customer requested design. Haven't done a stock removal knife in a while. Bog Oak, Wrought iron, red liners and stainless pins with a 52100 blade.

WARNING!! There may be just a tiny bit of bragging in this post. My 17yo son just came out to the shop and showed me his SAT scores. 1530 out of 1600! Puts him in the 99th percentile of all SAT takers! After almost losing him several times last year (Teenage depression is no joke. My wife and I both agree that 2020 has been a cakewalk compared to the hell we went through in 2019). To see him apply himself and come through it like this has been amazing. His experiences are driving him to go to school and become a psychiatrist so that he can help people deal with their issues
