  1. Pommel is down from a little over 600 grams to 217grams and nearing it's final shape. Been trying to push the point of balance as far forward as I can and right now it is at about 12cm from the guard

  2. So, adventures in Mokume are going nicely. I'm trying some different things for different patterns. The smooth one is going to be used to make the guard for the drop point I'm making.

  3. Yes a good usable design but be careful in this area as bringing the point down so far creates a spot that is liable for cracking off. If you make the front of the scales as a round rather than a flat shape you get a thicker and stronger portion at the weakest point.

  4. Alex, the blade looks good, balanced, symmetrical. Nice job draw filing. Etch and polish will stand out nicely. Though only 4” I wouldn’t overthink the handle design. My thought is slim with some swell. JMO not to make the guard wide at all. Gary LT

  7. I had not thought about this, a very good point. I guess it's more of a "I have my first forge and am doing my first bit of sooty bladesmithing, what's the desert island hammer to get?" However, that's probably about as open-ended, if not more. In most of my hobbies, a lot more thought goes into things once I'm restricted -- ie, I could pick two desert island guitars in a second. Picking one? Take me all afternoon. I picked up some tongs at Ken's Iron, looking forward to having more than just a plain set. Got a pair that grip the rectangular end of a steel bar to accompany m

  10. What I do for doors are going to be two firebricks on a rail system. That should work. I have meanwhile tried to heat steel and it works like a charm, goes to good temperatures etc. Its abit gas hungry, I think it has something to do with setting, I havent used this type of forge yet. But its also big burner and big forge. So......
