  1. Just finished this one up and sent it off to Australia. 1095 with hamon, dragon scale pattern etched into the flats and masure birch burl handles. Definitely one of the crazier designs I've had to grind and heat treat.

  3. Hey guys. I just finished up the sheath on this one and got the pics done this morning. The steel is 1095 with a hamon, full tang and textured flats. The texture continues along the full length of the tang so you could pull off the carbon fiber and wrap it if you wanted. Overall length is 8.25" and blade length is 3.75".   5. Hey guys. It's been a long while since I've been on here and I just wanted to post a few pictures of my most recent piece. The steel is 1095. The pattern was created by cutting prespaced vinyl "scales" and applying them to the steel to act as a resist and then etching in ferric acid. The pattern was taken from picture of a crocodile I pulled off the internet. The handle is buckeye burl which had some pretty large voids in it so I had to hit it with the super glue pretty heavily. Turned out pretty nice overall, though I think.
  6. Hey guys. The texturing is done by painting on a resist and acid etching. You can get some really interesting results depending on what you use and how you apply it. If you want to see more of this type of thing check out Kiku Matsuda's work. Really cool stuff...

  8. Hey guys! I wanted to share my most current piece with you. It represents a change of direction in my style. I’ve been experimenting with the use of textures on my blades with pretty successful results. This piece was created from 1095 (from Aldo) with an acid etched texture on the flats, hamon, and carbon fiber handle scales in a takedown style.   10. Hey everybody. Here's a picture of a couple small kirdashi. I've been playing around with texturing techniques and I wanted a small quick project to try them out on so I settled on kiridashi since they're quick and easy to forge and grind. After I got done with the basic forging and ground the edge I painted a design on the handles and etched them. Then, after heat treating the quench left them nice and black, so I sanded down the highlights to give them a bit more of contrast. Let me know what you think!

  13. Helios was the personification of the sun in Greek mythology. Helios was imagined as a handsome god crowned with the shining aureole of the sun, who drove the chariot of the sun across the sky each day and back down to earth circling Oceanus and, having traveled through the world ocean returned to the East at night. Like the sun that Helios personifies, the handle of this knife resembles the glowing, constantly changing surface of the sun, and the blade features a unique hexagon pattern.   14. The vinyl is cut and all the little bits that aren't part of the design are pulled off the backing paper and thrown away. Then application tape (it's a little bit like masking tape but the adhesive is different and less aggressive) is applied over the design, then the whole thing is pulled off the backing paper and applied to the knife. When the application tape is removed it leaves the hexagons in the same positions as they were on the backing paper. It's basically the same technique as any other prespaced decal (car dealerships use a lot of these on the bumpers of the cars they sell).
  15. I've been experimenting with new ways to achieve an interesting finish that isn't super labor intensive. Here's my latest results. The effect was achieved by using vinyl to mask off parts of the blade and ferric acid to etch. I may have to figure out a better way to remove the vinyl after the etch, though! Drove me nuts trying to pick off all those little vinyl hexagon shapes!!
  16. Available for purchase: This is a skinner I finished up a little while back and I'd like to offer it for sale. The steel is 1075, differentially hardened with furnace cement in parks #50 and polished to reveal the hamon. This represents a new style for me. I had been using satanite as the insulator and water as the quenching medium and when I went to furnace cement and oil, it dramatically improved my results. The overall size of this knife is 8.75" with a blade length of 4.25". The handle is double dyed, stabilized maple burl, and the knife comes with a brown tooled leather sheath.
  17. Hey guys! Sorry I didn't get back on here sooner... Yep, you're right, it's my logo. I just etched it a bit deep. The interesting thing is, (and I don't know how clear this will be from the picture) part of the logo intersects with the hamon which means the etch of the logo is at different depths. At first I thought my etch was uneven, but after a while the lightbulb came on and I realized the line follows the hamon. In terms of my polish, I did the lemon juice etch with a cleaning off of the oxides several times till the hamon showed up nicely. Then to finish it off I used 3 in 1 oi
  18. Hey everybody! I've been experimenting with various different methods of polishing lately here and I'm starting to get to the point where I'm really happy with the results. This one is 1075 (from Admiral); it was clayed with Rutland Black furnace cement and quenched in Parks #50 oil. I'll be posting more pictures when I get a sheath made for it, but for now I wanted to get the picture of the hamon up. I'd love to hear what you think!
  19. Salem and Kevin, Thanks for the tips, guys. I've been using lemon juice to etch, and simichrome to clean off the oxides between etching cycles. At the end I use 800 grit loose abrasive with 3 in 1 oil to make a slurry and sort of scrub the blade with it. Most of that was learned through Walter Sorrells' videos. I'm going to have to try out the pumice, though. Everything you guys have been saying has made a lot of sense! Thanks for taking the time to post. ~Matt
  20. The photo doesn't actually show it, but the pattern was done on opposing edges, so the edge opposite the camera has the same pattern. It would be pretty cool to see this in pattern welded steel. Now if only I had plenty of that lying around...

    A while back we did these as a project with the local blacksmithing club. The design isn't original; I found the project on the net, but I think they turned out pretty nice. The effect is achieved by cutting partway into your square steel bar (I started the cuts with a thin cutoff wheel in an angle grinder and then defined them with chisel after heating the piece) and then twisting it to make the cubes "pop". I've always wanted to try this out on a knife handle.
  22. The one below is a similar fighter, forged integral from W1 steel, clayed with Satanite and quenched 3 sec. in warm water, then finished in 120 deg. oil. I sanded this one to 2500, then etched/cleaned/polished a bunch, finishing the yakiba with pumice to whiten. Salem, Can you expound a bit on the pumice? What do you use, and how do you use it? Thanks!
