  1. Alan, I should have put this under THE WAY section….. could you move it please? I made this hanger for a friend….. I personally use the Farmers Almanac to get the day moving ….. It’s not a prayer but it works like a charm ….. to read it not wipe with it….ha ha ha
  2. I have forgotten how long ago this was….. it was a sword year at Ashokan…… the year Peter Johnson gave a talk at Ashokan….. I had been working on this seax ……months before the event I was pulling the handle off and this went flying ….. I heard it land ….I spent way too many hours looking for it and could have made a couple new ones in the time I wasted…. I gave up and the project got shelved… Yesterday I was looking for something else….I was wearing a head lamp to illuminate where I was looking …. My eyes swept over it and I looked back not believing what I saw …. There is was sitting on a roll of sandpaper under a shelf… right were it fell years ago… I suppose that is a sign that I now need to finish it…..
  3. SWEET…….. and Happy Birthday to the heart this is going to…..
  4. Thank you so much ….. I think the tools we use allow us to improve our chops…. Every bit as important as copping a design idea….standing on the shoulders of giants and all that….
  5. Dave, I’ve been AWOL on here for a while ….. nice to see your shop expanding ….. and your work also….so just to stir this pot a little …. Have you had a wow moment yet?
  6. Looks like you are welded…. though I would not call 1095 scrap….. unless it has been burned of course…..
  7. Channeling a Tibetan prayer wheel…….the symbol is a prayer for well being I think….. or something to do with good health or luck…. My memory fails…..
  8. I especially liked the walk through the shop……Thanks Gary
  9. That is so cool….Yeah, long term investment technique …… ha ha ha
  10. Jeremy, the fact that you recognize places you can improve is all that is required ….. and you ordered more steel and acquired a press? Yeah I’d say you are addicted …. Be careful of that press… it can move steel when it is too cold to forge…. Don’t press when you are under a red heat …. That will form cracks……
  11. That is beautiful attention to detail ….. both the blades and the sheaths separately and when combined …. I agree with you ….A few more pics in progress please
  12. Interesting clamp while working on the handle ….. could you show us a shot of that? Thanks
  13. In the world of salt baths a capped off stainless tube is used to protect with thermocouple wire….would that work in a Kiln? I have a commercial kiln that uses the bare wire so maybe a stainless sheath to protect the thermo couple wire will not work in traditional kiln?
  14. I copied a bread knife my parents had that had this pattern….. easily sharpened with a Japanese knife file….. all be it time consuming…. as to evenly spaced serrations….. if you took a length of wood or metal and mark off even increments and then fix a registrar point on you grinder for the increments to lock into ….. clamp the knife blade to the stick and the touch it to the grinder . Move to the next mark and do the same… you still need to pay attention to how deep you grind each serration ….
  15. I’m sorry ….i was in too much of a hurry….. The author is Cixin Liu……. He is a Chinese science fiction author… First book is The Three Body Problem Second book is The Dark forest ( remembrance of earth’s past). Third book is Death’s end ( remembrance of Earth’s past) A trilogy novel that has Computer games,Quantum mechanics, Space travel…. Humanity…… science….. world politics ……
  16. Warren, Time flys ….Have you started yet? Yes on the taking little bites at a time and alternating each bite to make it a bar as opposed to making a pancake and then turning that on up edge….
  17. Jacob, That’s looking good so far……in my experience it was only when I could see the results that I could really decide if I liked what I was seeing ….. and then adjusting accordingly on the next one… Take your best guess and take notes….. time has a way of making your memory of previous choices you made fuzzy….and we all know what doing the same thing and expecting different results is called……
  18. That’s fun Eric…..I stared at this a while till i saw that the piston handle allows you to use your hand or your foot…. Good idea….. mechanical stops on either side of the ram will allow you to keep billets square…..
  19. I’m sorry . I got my programs mixed up….. Tim & Kevin are on A Craftsman’s Legacy…… Ric Furerr is not on the Craftsman ”s legacy ….. He was on a NOVA show….also PBS …..it is an hour long….. There is an also an Armourer on the Craftsman’s legacy …..Which was a really good episode also….I apologize to not remembering his name…. I think these shows are on You tube also…..My monthly allowance is too small to use you tube so I have not checked to see….
  20. On broadcast TV PBS has sub channels….. one of them is called the Create Channel….. I think you will find these on line under that handle….. this morning Tim Zowanda was on the Craftsman’s Legacy …..it is a 1/2 show….. really fun to watch…..besides all the info and getting to see their shops …….. Kevin Cashin and Ric Furrer have also been on it ….. I have watched each episode many times as shows are cycled thru the create channel programing…. Tim makes a knife from dirt….. Kevin makes a sword and some good in-depth metallurgy…… Ric smelts steel and then forges a breast plate from it…
  21. This is a trilogy ……the best one I have ever read….. I hardly ever like a book enough to read it twice….. I have read this three times….. and will read it again some time in the future….
  22. Don’s salt bath ideas deserve a Big Thank You to Don as well…..
  23. I have used many different Objects to clean the mig nozzle … I have think a SQ Drive screw works the best …..
  24. Yeah ,over the top……..
  25. I like the look of fluting … I think it is a good idea for griping kitchen knives with wet hands….. this is not finished yet…… the handle needs to be on center with the virtual circle of the vise….. for filing the ends of the handle the bar the handle is attached to can be slid in the slot to adjust …… Note where the marks have been established to conform with the flutes …… another view Not finished What end looks like ……not finished…… I hope these pics are self explaining….. if you have questions please ask….
