  1. Alan, are there any restrictions on posting video directly on the forum? I don't have a YouTube account to post a link but I have a video I want too post. It's a 90 second video and is 175.2 MB. Thanks.

Embedded youtube links take up almost zero space. Uploading videos to the forum itself takes up a lot of space.

  2. Can someone answer a question? Which metal in a damascus billet should be on the outside of the stack if you are using 1095 and 15n20??

If you want even layers, then the bottom and top of the stack on should have opposite types of steel (i.e. 1095 on the top and 15n20 on the bottom).

The reality, of course, is that if you're going for anything like a high layer billet, and you've started with thin steel, you'll probably grind away bits or all of the top/bottom layers during the grind clean/chop/stack/reweld of the pattern welding process.

Don't worry too much about this. I often double stack layers with the same steel, or add a thick bar of another type of steel, to initial stack for texture variation.

The predominate metaphor for pattern welding is wood grain, so imagine a really nice, polished surface of hardwood. The irregularity of the grain is part of the beauty. If it was too even, too precise, it wouldn't work.

      Luck!

  3. This may not be news to everyone, but I really thought it was significant enough to share. It looks like the ABS (American Bladesmith Society) has linked to this forum on the official ABS website

They may faint from the lack of plunge cuts and ricassos on display around here!

  4. Dave,

I was just looking over that spectacular single edged viking sword and a question popped in my head....

What is your technique for making fullers?

To me that is real magic right there. The lines are so crisp. How in Merlin's beard do you do it?

      Thanks bud.

Check out these links to posts I've made that explain how I do it.

This is a really old post (from 2012) so the images are broken. Here's a link to the images.

Also, here's a newer post describing my new and improved Z axis rest.

  5. How do people figure out how long to quench their sword blades so that it just crosses the martensite start point (to straighten blades right after quench)? I have heard that people do it about 7 seconds or so, but I'm planning on quenching something on the thinner side. I know I might break the blade in the process if I get it wrong, but I'm willing to sacrifice a blade or two in order to learn.

Jerrod is a real professional that works in a foundry (or whatever you call it) . . . but he's the real deal, so listen to him for sure.  But here's a simple answer: Quench until it stops vibrating. Don't forget . . . pull the sword out too soon and it'll be hot enough to flame, which is dangerous, so err on the side of quenching too long.  In general, however, after it stops vibrating you'll have enough time to fix warps, etc. Also, if you're really worried about warping/sabering/corkscrewing, you can HT at uniform thickness and grind in your bevels. If I have a profile that I really want to be precise about, I do that.

      Luck!

Didn't know you made folders! Not a lot of smiths make swords and folders. Nice range, man.

  7. Is there someplace to watch Arctic Fire 2016? From what I can tell, it was streamed on Facebook, but I can't seem to find those videos on the Arctic fire Facebook page, anymore (Except one wrap up discussion video).

Sorry it's taking so long. This is the consequence of doing this event for free w/ all volunteer work. You've heard the expression "Good, Fast, Cheap . . . choose only two." Well, AF is good and cheap.

Not yet, James. The production company that filmed it is still doing the editing on the video.

  9. hubris .. realizing that steel hates us ... I guess it has the right to we do burn it and hit it with hammers.

I grew up on a fishing boat, my dad had a saying: The Sea will always get in and find out what you did wrong. I think steel is like the sea in this regard.

Yes. I often struggle with the "I'm not in the right mental state to work in the shop" denial. Ruined many a piece because my mind was in too many pieces and not at peace. . .

  12. Hey, quick question... What steel would be best to use for a crossbow prod? I know most would probably work ok if it is given a proper spring temper, but I am looking for something a little more specific.

  13. Does anyone have a good source for deer antlers? I need to get ahold of the round type, and I can only find it in scales.

  14. Has anyone ever tried seeing what would happen if you shot your knife with say, a 9mm? I've always been curious, to see what it would do to different qualities of blades

My first thought was: That would be a pointless test. Then I had a beer and thought: Hell yeah I'd like to try that! . . . Perhaps that's a commentary on the advisability of this test.

      Heh.

  17. Was scrolling through a topic when I accidentally tapped the wrong button and nearly ended up reporting D.Fogg for an inappropriate post. That would have been awkward.

We admins actually get several "reports" every week or so that are clearly just accidental clicks. I've spent many a moment reading through a thread and wondering: "Now, what the heck did this guy get offended by?!" until I realize it must be an accidental report click.

Don't get me started on "The Hobbit" movies . . . IMHO anyone who loves the book must hate the films.
