I was just talking copyright with a friend of mine very recently.......one very hard part of copyright is that there is no copyright police, you have to have the money to take the fight to the enemy. copyright shmoppyright it doesnt matter, even though its not fair....i spent 50,000 cash and was in court 32 times and after that i swore i would never talk to a lawyer again, and i won............i would take the route that some suggested above and find some kind of peace with the situation and try to capitalize on it . my humble opinion. nice blade by the way id buy one, but only an original >

AH this is a question i have as an owner of a couple of Global kitchen blades (Pictured above).........how did they make the handle? it feels like hollow metal, and seems very integral to the blade, i thought many times it would be badass to be able to do it, but i have no idea how to actually make a blown up handle like that.......or maybe its wood cored or somehting i have no idea.....any questions or youtube videos? hehe thanks

  5. i was talking about making a home made anvil the other day to some other blacksmiths, because i had welded together 6 1"x10"x18" plates of mild steel together with deep V notches all the way around, making on massive block of steel, for a basic square anvil 6" wide by 18" long, however i wanted a tool steel top on it. i could not find a tool steel drop from any of the places around that where even that size, if they were, they were good money. i was told to go to a local steel supply place and ask for "grader blade". if you don't know what that is, the large earth scrapers use it as the "bits" that bolt up along the cutting edge of the long , the edges of excavators buckets, etc. get one the correct width, and just arc weld it to the top. if that axle dings up on the top with repeated hammer blows, that mite be an idea to get your tool steel top. even if you just cut it square with a cut off wheel on a 6 inch grinder and put an inch of weld on 4 sides it would hold for a long, long time. anyway however you do, it nice find. good luck. OH i almost forgot ( sorry i put the kids to bed and came back) i am making a very similar post anvil, in a poured concrete base.. i mean to put some belting from a coal conveyor cut in the same diameter as the shaft, one layer, to deaden the shock to the concreted base. I think it will kill some of the energy from the hammer blow..........but after trying it on the garage floor, not a lot, and will help, i think, in not blowing out the bottom. also, wire mesh 1.5 inches from the very bottom of the concrete, and 1.5 inches under the rubber belting pad will help in longevity. sorry for long post, just that i had a really similar project im working on right now.
  6. hey man that is really something i checked out your facebook page as well, very very cool twist you have there....would it be any trouble to have you write a lil about how you cooked in bonemeal, and also just maybe a blow by blow of the welding up the spine steel, the twist, and the edge? its so very clearly delineated, the lines between the twists etc. im a newbie smith so bear with my curiosity > thanks and good work again

  10. i wish i was more accomplished ... my sum total of 3 knives and all, however i have had to do many weld tests on the spot that are Xrayed or Ultrasound tested, bent, and visually examined during every phase of the process. I can feel your pain in some ways on having to please a 3rd party when its all on the line (a job). So what i can say is this: it looks great, but even more than that: best of luck to you.
  11. hey guys keep the kitchen knife conversation rolling please please..i love a great kitchen knife. any links worth mentioning would be a good help. im more interested at this time in mono steel construction since im a newb speciall with forge welding. BTW can anyone shed any light on "blue paper steel" and "white paper steel"? i saw this on sale on the same site as welding powder here: http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/product/716365/Japanese-Welding-Powder/detail.jsf just curious what the diff is. i think one is the blade "bit" material, and the other the lesser steel.....but any info to round that info out would be great. thanks. OH almost forgot. i have a lot of fisherman friends, and wanted to make long thin fillet knives any thoughts on that would be great besides long thin and skinny......>
  12. i am designing a tool very similar to the guitine fuller hammer press that was just recently posted for welding cable. i need to know what the minimum force in lbs/in2'd it takes to weld.....it would be extremely helpfull if it was a technicaly correct response not based on feel, but hard fact. if that is possible. i know there are many variables, but it seems that there has to be a "window" of force, from a minimum amount to a maximum amount that will weld.

  14. i am glad i found this part of the forum. I was born in ketchikan alaska. when i was 3 we moved to the copper river valley of alaska. lived there till i was 18 yrs old in the shadow of the mountains there. i ready every book in the 2 small libraries that were within 45 mi of us by the time i was 10 yrs old. it made me want to go see all the things i had read about. I started working holding down a mans job the summer of my 7th grade year. i saw a movie with the NASA kids camp in it and wanted to go so i saved all the money from my trapline and snowplowing to go. the trapline was 500 miles long at its peak. Beaver, martin, otter, fox, lynx, wolf mink were the main fur bearers.........and lots of them. it was about then that a knife maker named Wes Cannon who was friends with my dad found out we had a massive strip of bandsaw blade from a logging operation in our scrap pile ( we had a huge amount of everything laying around when you are 250 miles from the nearest stop light you dont throw anything away) and made us knifes of every kind to use in our lives... we had the trapline, we shot or caught every ounce of protien we ate (moose, caribou, salmon) and in some of the most extreme circumstances you could imagine. anyway, i had many talks with Wes about knife making, i am pretty sure he at least made a living from it as his knives ended up selling for quite a chunk. as i started to get into knife making and smithing again, i started to remember layer by layer his telling me about cable damascus, his first power hammer etc......this was....24 years later?? along time anyway. it has always been on my brain to forge knives, but after i moved to hawaii i was talked into secondary school so i went to a technical school and got a instrumentation and control/ telecommunications degree. I then started traveling. carried two laptops, and a guitar. i hated doing laundry so i would buy a weeks worth of clothes from K mart in whatever city i was in and leave em on the hotel floor when they were to stiff to be seen in. not a lot of chances to forge doing that. A lot of twists and turns including being a single dad for 10 years. i am now remarried and in a house i don't mind dying in and a chance to develop a shop that i want. i am a journey man ironworker as well as a woodworker, and have a ridiculous amount of experience in making almost anything out of metal. however, this is all structrual steel or "ornamental" steel. heat treating and knife making specifically were out of that realm. miles of commercial handrail and stairs are what i have done, along with working on some commercial things where the company wont tell you the alloy you are working on, they just give you the preheat, weld specs, post heat, peen if needed. hehe one note of fact:: i was rebuilding a 110,000 LB Foster Wheeler ball mill that grinds coal into flour fine consistency recently. now this thing has been operating for over 40 years. it is basically a giant tube lined with armor plates that have a wave in each one........224 plates to be exact, on the drum, and lining the ends of it. the ballmill is then filled with Super high chrome content balls of 3 different sizes. then it spins about 3000 RPMS. after 40 years of that incredibly destructive atmosphere, the armor plates looked like they just barely had the paint wore off.........the alloy is industry secret, in fact the chinese could only replicate the other parts, they had to buy the plates. anyway i digress. i became an ironworker because i imagined the ornamental railings, gates etc. but my disapointment was supreme when "ornamental" became clear that it was an industry buzword for a straight tube steel raling that while takes skill to install and build by no means even approaches the skill apparent in the video sam salvatti showed of the german smith making such things.....so i started to build my own knowledge of such things, ended up on this website, and continued the study of metallurgy, forging, heat treating, and now, trying to apply that knowledge. i doubt i will ever make a living doing knife work, but i am interested in turning out knives that have the very highest quality materials, every detail drawn out to the Inth degree, filligree, even insetting with gems. after that, making scabards .. somehow i doubt ill live long enough to do it but its a great diversion to fill the time til then. nuff said. im tired. ciao
  15. i live in minnesota twin cities area. besides the packed classes posted on the local metal smiths page is there anyone that is a blade smith or has a good deal of experience in that area that wouldnt mind meeting a new face. or total newbs for that matter. i would trade work for learning, cash for learning. whatever. the only thing is that my work schedule SUCKS. i am permanently on call so there is is only 2 days per year that i wont respond and that is dedicated to my family. i am interested in meeting more people in the bladesmithing/blacksmithing community and willing to work for it, if you are producing welded steel products and want someone who can swing a hammer all day let me know via a reply here ill PM you or some such. best of luck.
  16. that is great video. i love the old school beauty. i have done miles of handrails and it seems like in the name of the almighty dollar every one wants tube or bar stock with straight lines and done yesterday. very few will pay or even understand the beauty of such things makes me think i was born a few hundered years to late. also makes me wish i wasn't 20 years away from when i could understand auf deutsch.
  17. yes, this is one hell of an answer to a question i have had, i have an idea to make almost the exact same tool, only with a lever so instead of tapping the upper part you could just move the handle down and "squish". great idea. thanks so much for bothering to post it. i got the lever idea from a tool i use to nip tube steel to miter round tube to accept a nother round tube, mostly for handrails. it exerts enough pressure to nip steel effortlessly with a 3 ft handle, i figured it would apply enough pressure to weld with and would enable me to move very fast and precise. once agin great tool.

O man, i am drooling over this. i could turn this setup into a human blender. salads for as far as the eye can see!! great design, and i love the fact you can get super up tight on the blades with your grip in a very strong position, i was wondering at the cord in the upper hole just behind the blade but once i scrolled down and saw your finger in there i realized why.........great design in my humble opinion and even better execution. one other question > what is the dimension from axe blade edge to back of spine?
  19. hi guys thanks for the replies........one thing that i forgot to specify was i wanted to get a laser pyrometer, pending anyones advize to NOT get a laser type is the wand simply the cheapest or are there other reasons ? thanks

  22. oh yeah my "lighter beater" got turned into a practice tomohawk........now i gotta go buy another one > you cant really see it but its sitting ontop of the anvil. if its not welded down and i know its not mild steel around the house its been forged................

GAH my sincere appologies Alan about pic size i thought i was doing it right. good to know about the bricks exploding .>thank you and yes, ill 3rd that about a lighter hammer LMAO. i am a big dude and used to brutally hard work all day but ill tell ya i was LIMP after pounding out the half round file. one thing i do like about the bricks though is the flat bottom.........it seems like if a knife has a slight curv in it i put it on the bottom, let er rip and it just flattens out all on its own.
  24. ah, good advice on the kitchen cutter. i noticed in using it some of what you are saying. Since it is one of the first for me it is going to get tested to destruction, especially since im way more worried about the heat treat than most of the other aspects. if i can visualize something i can usually build it, but the heat treat........that is a lot more visceral, and hard to get right, although i am hoping to take out some of the guess work with a pyrometer. i am thinking that with a pyrometer and a little practice i can replicate what i see in a phase diagram with increasing accuracy. thanks for the tip on the "Black heat" i was wondering how to rectify that and didnt quite have the knowledge yet to fix it. knife 2...........ah sigh this is just going to take a while. i really liked making the guard, in 2 pieces it was a great learning experience to try and hammer out 2 identical pieces so it was kind of a seperate project and different learning curve, but it threw the balance out of wack. so it will become a simple guard probly, but not much more time as that knife is also going to get destroyed. i will heat treat it , figure all that out, then test to destruction. i am getting a pryomter to help me learn the color phases of the steel, and also just be as accurate as possible on the HT.. i forgot........the grind. yes, right hand chisel grind, with more squared off tip, however the edge from the ricasso to where the straight edge meets the tip bevel would have an ever so slight convex grind, to sort of make a Khukri effect in the cutting action, but not nearly so obvious...... basically more work to be done ill post a pic or 2 as i go see what ya think
