I've seen good success in mixing 3:1 vinegar and Lemon juice.

But I also left my steel to soak at temperature for 3-5 minutes.

@Isaac About six minutes or so, take out and clean off oxides with steel wool, then soak back in.

Keep in mind that bringing out the

hamon takes a LOT of polishing a LOT

Also it looked at one point in dale like they were actually trying to temper a sword. Overdid the heat though it seemed.

  3. So how many of you solid-fuelers are hoping to make the "bad" list?

Sounds exciting, I'm very jealous. is it 2x72? If I can be nosy, how much was it to build? I need to build one myself, but am pretty low on funds.

Actually a friend of mine built and gave me the main frame, besides that the wheels and pulley system were about $300 total

  5. Sometimes blacksmiths are upsetting

  6. Got a nice long roll of leather from a yard sale for five bucks. Now I actually have something to practice with.

  8. Has anyone ever tried seeing what would happen if you shot your knife with say, a 9mm? I've always been curious, to see what it would do to different qualities of blades

I think you should totally do it with a rifle James.

      The .45acp has a muzzle velocity of only ~1100 ft/s with ~600 ft·lbf of force whereas the 7.62 x54 has ~2600 ft/s with 2700 ft·lbf of force.

You would be doing this in the name of science of course... not fun to be had.

I believe I will. But the range in my shop only goes to 14 yards. I will want to be a bit further back for a rifle test...

.223; 6.8mm SPC; and .30-06 should be adequate diversity for a propper test. Though I expect all will punch through, though the lighter 2 may not with frangible varmint rounds.

  9. I notice that lately a ton of new bowies are being made. I wonder why that is?

  10. I just signed up for the Visalia CA hammer in: anyone else going?

  11. Finally events and money-requiring things are over, and I can get back to work on the grinder. Is Beaumont metal works a good site to get pulley system and drive wheel from? Where did yall get yours?

  12. Got a new jewelers saw and a lot of silver solder. Time for detail practice.

  13. I have proven to myself that 375 is a little too low of a temperature to temper 1084 to. Thankfully that's the lowest temperature I've tempered it to.

  15. This bowie is gonna be awesome.

  16. Scale is so weird. Sometimes it's cool, sometimes it's hot, and you only find out when it lands on your arm.

  17. When is the next arctic fire, or is another one planned to happen even?

Still waiting for a reply to my email. I'm just joining the society for now: school prospects possibly in the future but no plans being made. Hopefully I can get JS in a few years.

That would take a lot of work to figure out. There is actually an ABS master just north of me, if we're serious about it you could talk to him. Aaron Wilburn is his name.
