  1. Hey, I've got a quick question for those of you who speak Greek. What is "Never yield" Or "Do not yield" in Greek? (This is for a novel I am writing)

Caleb, i'll do some thinking about this tonight. I'm having trouble coming up with a good word for yield in the sense you want. you have a lot of potential options, but I don't think they necessarily mean what you want. I'll see what I can come up with.

Thank you very much! The phrase is supposed to be the "theme" of the novel: basically "never give up" but Do not yield sounds better IMO.

  2. So I saw the Desolation of Smaug. If you haven't read the books, you probably won't understand it. If you have, you'll be disgusted with the stuff they put in.

They're entertaining but should not be called The Hobbit.

Holy crap Caleb! Yes. Its just not the Hobbit, Jackson just got carried away playing to stupid stereotypes, instead of being true to the (awesome) spirit of the book.

Yes, the main problem that was his doom, was the whole spirit through the movie. Instead of marvelling at the awe of these caverns, and the growth of this, it's more of a BOOM BOOM BOOM! MORE FIRE!! MWAHAHAHA!!

  3. Just read through the Bragi topic. That settles it, I'm doing another sword.

  4. Darn it!! I've got the urge to make a sword again!!

Cocobolo is fun to work with. Just wear a mask if sanding with power.

  7. So I've heard that old wagon wheels are a possible source of wrought. Are there any other wrought iron sources you can imagine in a sort of old west town?

Every other part of a Horse Cart could by made of it. Also Horseshoes, Nails and Claps in Buildings, Bands of Barrels and Buckets. Quiet every Thing made of Iron pre 1880 I guess (I don’t know the history of your Town). Ore, if Steel is recycled, it can be every Thing, made from Iron.

And tools surviving from that time, anvil, tongs, ….

But I’m quiet sure you wont cut an anvil in peaces.

  10. Quick question about leatherworking: does the thread have to be any special, extra-tough thing? Or will plain sowing thread work?

Waxed linen is the standard. Linen does not stretch like synthetics and is very strong.

Good ol Tolkien, inspiring smiths left and right.

  16. Just a random idea: has anyone ever tried camping out in an iron-rich locality, without any tools, and tried smithing just like that, creating everything from scratch? It'd be an interesting project...

  17. In case I ever get to meet some of you IRL, keep in mind I'm a lot more shy off the Internet than on. Just an FYI

  18. My family got permission from a landowner to collect wood. Whilst helping. I get to pick out the good Manzanita for knife scales. This'll last me a long time.

  19. Well, I think I underestimated my friends coal forge. It actually started to melt our steel.

Yep... as one of my friends said... When one is in the forge, one needs to be there completely. It´s very easy to burn the steel in a coal forge.. I lost 1 seax and two welded knives this way :D

i can vouch as well. WE were able to save the knife, but it was scary. We were almost finished with cutting out the core of the skeletal frame handle we were working on. I tuned to sharpen the hot cut, he was asking me a question and, becuaus of the lack of attention, we very nearly burned the handle off.

This one it more sorta dripped. It was annoying too, because when we went for a forge weld the fire wasn't quite hot enough (due to lack of fuel) and it failed.

  20. Today will be my first day actively using a coal forge. Lets see how this goes...

  21. Love this! Thanks Provos!

  22. Ever get that feeling when you work for hours on the knife, and then the finished product you're just disgusted with?

  23. Is watching ARCTIC FIREEEE!!

  24. I NEED AN ANVIL!!!!
