Alan, are there any restrictions on posting video directly on the forum? I don't have a YouTube account to post a link but I have a video I want too post. It's a 90 second video and is 175.2 MB. Thanks.

This may not be news to everyone, but I really thought it was significant enough to share. It looks like the ABS (American Bladesmith Society) has linked to this forum on the official ABS website.

@Dave Stephens I think they might be making moves toward acceptance of that style. Matthew Parkinson had two such knives in his JS presentation set. Ya never know!

Moving sucks. Packing up a shop to move sucks double.

@Dan P. only twice?
The house I'm in right now represents the longest time I have ever lived at a single address, 16 years. When I lived in Boston, I had 14 different addresses in 12 years. Two of them I renewed leases on!

What I love about this forum (among other things) is it seems to be the one place on the internet that isn't filled with people hating each other over politics. We just make cool stuff, that's all.

We just spent 8 days off the grid on our property in New Mexico. Beautiful weather, great setting, and a lot of work. Man, it felt great!

I know a place where the land is very inexpensive right now. http://ramahrealty.com/
You climb a mountain one step at a time Wes. One step at a time.

I'm new to the forum folks so I don't know if this question can be asked here. What are some of the best books in your opinion for beginning blacksmiths/knife makers? And specifically, books that may address how metals will react under certain conditions? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I would rather read up on the art and physics of heated and cooled metals before any practical applications. Thanks.

There is a sub-forum here titled Books, Videos and Other Media. You can probably find some recommendations there. https://www.bladesmithsforum.com/index.php?/forum/29-books-videos-and-other-media/&page=3
Mark Aspery's books on Blacksmithing are very good for beginning to advanced work (there are 3 books in all) and are far and away considered the standard reference. The Blacksmith and his Art by J.E. Hawley. Practical Blacksmithing and Metal Working by Percy Blanford. Books are great to have because you can keep them handy in the shop and refer to them while trying the techniques, something you cannot do with Youtube videos. Very often the type of information regarding metals and their reactions under heat and stress are not covered in videos, but are covered in books.
For knife making, Jim Hrisoulas's books (there are 3) have been a standard reference for a lot of us, but there are many more out there now than there were when Jim wrote his books. Jim frequents this forum and goes by JPH. This forum is the largest collection of information on the art I have found. Read many of the pinned threads. They are pinned for good reason.
Welcome to the forum and the madness.

Is there a term for the style of knife that is plain carved steel, usually satin or polished finish?

Going out to our property in New Mexico tomorrow. Going to lay out the cabin, the shop, and meet the well driller.

At the ABANA conference in Salt Lake this week. This is awesome. There's a separate Blade Making tent with demos by Ray Rybar, Jim Austin (met him today) and David Lisch.
