  3. Heating a File?

Ok guys I'm a true green horn so bare with me is it better to heat and aneal a file if you wanted to grind it into a knife? seems to me they are quite hard to somewhat brittle to stiff. so my thought was to take the hardness out, do the work on it, then quench and anneal any and all help appreciated
