  1. Im interested in bladesmithing. My friend introduced me into it and I just love it. I know everything I need and can get it, but I don't want to purchase the items until I get some lessons to know what I'm really in for and if I will truly love it. Does anyone know anybody in northern Virginia who can help me? Im looking for experienced people who can help someone who knows next to nothing about it. Ive done a fair bit of research of this and it sounds very appealing to me.

    Which hammer for me?

As I was going about looking at tools that I was interested in purchasing I came across hammers. Conner Michaux told me that your hammer can't have sharp edges and that the edges would have to be rounded. Is it true? If so, how would I go about rounding them? If anyone has any suggestions of any hammers that I could buy somewhere at a Home Depot, Lowes, or somewhere online, please let me know!

    Which hammer for me?

Can they cool down fast though? I need to move my forge around my garage so I’m wondering if it could cool down in an hour or something like that?

    Which hammer for me?

Yea. I found a nice hammer on amazon. $18. Hopefully I can find nice things for low prices. I also found a somewhat good vise for starting out. It’s at Lowe’s for $50 Could anyone send me a link to soft Bricks that I could use in a propane forge?

    Which hammer for me?

I’ve actually decided against it. I currently have no space in my garage. My dad uses a bay for tools and stuff and the other 3 are for cars. I decided to use the bag my dads car is parked in when he is at work. I would take out and put everything away. Is it possible to have the bricks cool down faster or are there other bricks that I could use that don’t retain heat well but my forge would still work?

    Which hammer for me?

So I was doing some looking around for vises and drill presses when I came across a drill press vise. Thoughts?

  13. Which steel should I start out with first and where would I purchase them? I don’t want to buy some cheap stuff from wherever. I also don’t want to spend a fortune on steel. Any recommendations are welcome!

    Which hammer for me?

From what I can tell, the propane forge can stand up without something holding it up? If so, could i use a regular brick to hold it up?

    Which hammer for me?

Im planning on making the beginners propane forge that Jeremy Blohm posted early in this column. Does it matter which bricks I use? I can easily go to a dump and buy bricks for dirt cheap. I also found some other bricks that are specialised for forges. Does it really matter? I could spend $2 or $40. Just wanted to know because money is money and every bit I can save I can put into this later on! Edit: Also does anyone have the dimensions for angle iron that I should use for the propane forge? I read it over and over and still can't find them! ;P Speaking of my forge, its propane so I'm wondering how long propane will last. Edit #2: For my hammer handle does it matter between hickory wood and fiber glass?

    Which hammer for me?

It's not because of that although I do agree that the bright blue isn't appealing to me. I do appreciate your advice though. I might order both so I can try both of them. Having more then one hammer isn't bad so maybe...

    Which hammer for me?

Your right that I'm just starting out my journey. Im expecting to have a lot of fun doing this. Thanks for the advice on the hammer. It looks like the perfect hammer for me. A Vaughan hammer looks great and all but I just can't see myself using that hammer. Im going to check out the alb cross peen hammer with a hickory handle. Thank you again!

    Which hammer for me?

Does anyone know where I could find some good double sided hammers for a reasonable price? I can't seem to find double sided hammers that are metal. I keep finding rubber heads and stuff like that.

    Which hammer for me?

I read that and it helped a lot. I was a bit confused on what I need though. I know it’s all right there but I just can’t seem to find it. Could you give me a list of what I need? Please include EVERYTHING

    Forge Fuel

My family owns 15 aces of land, and it is covered with woods. Would wood be a good fuel for a forge since it can break down and form coals, and would it heat up just as fast or faster than other fuels such as coal or gas?

    Which hammer for me?

Okay. I will go with a 3-4 inch then. I was planning on using a wood stump for my anvil stand but maybe not. If I did should I get a piece of plywood and drill it onto the stump for a bigger area. I’m trying to figure out what I need to start off. I already did the math and I’m already over 200 which was expected but I guess it surprised me when I actually did see how expensive it got. It’s fine though. I was expecting to spend up to 500 anyway. I’m also in need of some forge ideas. Brick forge dirt forge? No gas forges because that is expensive. Maybe charcoal. Does anyone know any good designs for a beginner for charcoal?
