  1. Jason,

If you need good steel to get your career as a knife maker going in the right direction give me a call. As long as I know it's okay with Dad I can send you a few pieces of steel that you should be able to handle with no problems and you should be able to handle the heat treat as well. ;)

  2. Richard,

Such Wisdom. You must live in the woods and think about this stuff!! Just so you all know, the bar is in process. I'm working on the cutting schedule and should have it sent off in about an hour. Dick, I'm thinking of having some put through a creep feed grinder. Do you want to try some thin stuff for folders?

    Professor,

You make it worth the hassles.

  3. As long as we're at it why not L-6 as well. We could match up the chemistry's so they weld perfectly!!!!!.....................What makes you think I can handle it? I'll bet that, given enough time and effort we may be able to rustle up enough pounds to pull it off but it would be a hustle. Now if you happen to have a little time on your hands Deker, I'm sure you could probably find enough guys to get to the 1/2 way mark and I'll take care of the other 1/2

  4. Is this in the usual 4 ft sticks like the 1084.

    Jerry

    Jerry,

It will be available in 4 ft standard length but if you needed something longer it should be no problem.

If you want O-2 I would have to put quite a bit together. It is doable. Think we can come up with enough interested parties to get about 4,500 pounds together? :)

  5. Hoping this will do the trick!! Material should be ready for shipment at the end of January.

  6. Jeff,

The FG stands for fine grain achieved through the addition of a slight bit of Vanadium. The new batch is a custom smelt so I decided to add just a little extra! As for Flat Ground, we have a service that does it for us at reasonable prices if you need it.

We at New Jersey Steel Baron wish you all a Happy Holiday. The above material will be available at the end of January. There has been a lot of interest in the W-2 and the thinner sizes of 1084FG. I am waiting on Certs. and should have them posted by the end of the week. If you are interested in buying any quantities please send an E-Mail to njsteelbaron@gmail.com with the quantity you are interested in along with your address and Contact# and we will write back a confirmation letter. We want no money at this time, we just need to gauge sizes and volume.

Standard sizing will be 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 2" with wider sizes readily available. We will be offering the 1084 cut to standard Damascus Billet sizes of 1",1 1/4" and 1 1/2" x 6" to match our DEAD FLAT/BURR FREE 15N20.The material is decarb free and annealed and can be stacked right out of the box.Our 1095,1075,and 52100 is available this way as well. If you need different sizing, let us know and we'll cut it for you.

Not bad for an old plumber,

  8. The reason you haven't heard about it for months is because it takes months to get made. As a matter of fact the order is made. We are just waiting for it to arrive. IF there are no delays it should be ready to ship mid-January. Keep your Forges warm!

    Aldo

  9. As you wish Shannon,

The 1095 is Carbon .99 Manganese .42 and .14 Chrome. I do not have the traces on this. I picked this Chem. over 9 billets they had on the floor. It was the lowest Mang. they had and these 3 ingredients were my main concern.

The 1075 is Carbon .76 Mang .35 Chrome.13 Sil .24 Ni.090 Mo. .015. We were hoping to get a Water Hardening Carbon that was listed with .75 to .80 Carbon and.15 to .25 Mang, but the only thing on the floor at the time was a priority smelt for a company that had it made with a Mang. of .38. I thought this would be the best we could do at the time.

All the material is pickled and annealed as well. Soft as butter for the stock removers and no clean up if you plan on making Damascus.

I do have it mind to do a smelt with a lower Mang. content. I was considering a W-2 with a Carbon between .75 and .80 for next years smelt. Would love your input. The W-2 coming in December was formulated with C = 0,90-1,00%, Mn = 0,15-0,35%, V = 0,15-0,25% Cr = 0.1% max (aiming as low as possible). These are, of course, the targets. We hope for the mang to stay under .20 and the V about the same but it is still not an exacting science.

Brian, we should be listing all the pricing on Monday on the web sight.

By the way, we do plan on sending Certs. with all of the orders we send out and we also want to make sure that when a new batch comes in that it is tagged separately from any others we have in stock at the time. If you are content with what we gave you prior and I can offer it I certainly will.

IF YOU DON'T SEE IT ASK.

    THINGS CHANGE. KEEP CHECKING IN.

  11. Hey Guys,

Sam and Dee, I've got the 1075 and 1095 coming in this week. I have to allow a few weeks for processing the bar but I'd say it will be fine sword steel. Dee, I'll be putting a package together for you soon. And by the way, stick to forging!

Kenon, E-Mail me, I have a few choice pieces in stock that might interest you. What size are you looking for? I'll cut it for you.

Grant, good to hear from you. Will you be at Ashokan this year?

  12. Matt,

If you are talking about W-2 Formulas,no. That is yet to be determined. I have talked over formulas with a few guys in the past, but haven't gotten to the point of needing it yet. The general consensus wins the day. I was hoping to get your opinions. If I decide and blow it I get the blame. If you decide and blow it I can blame you! Either way, I end up with a pile of rust!

As a mater of fact, let's figure that out. Sizes in round bar, sizes in flat bar and a formula that will give us a good hamon. If you have any thoughts please let me know.

Kenon, stick your tongue in your mouth. Your welcome.

Dick, the 15N20 will be in .058,.065+.072 and thanks Man I've been thinking the same thing. Will I see you in Atlanta?

    Aldo

  13. Sam,your silly..........Baron is fine........just don't forget to bow.

Mr. Jackson, they are one in the same and from the same original smelt. Trade names are actually licensed,in some manor. I don't get into names or grades anymore. Content is what matters so I'll call it whatever they want me to.I had not discussed this grade in great detail, but I feel, for the guys who figured on it being around for a while that I should have it in stock as well.

Jake, I visited your web site. You've got one hell of a back yard! I may deliver it myself. It seems a shame though. Some of the grades started in Europe. Is it that hard to source good steel in the UK? We have sent out steel to Australia and Brazil. US mail is the best way to go. It's not cheap but the dollar is in your favor. E-Mail me at njsteelbaron@gmail.com . We'll look into it a little closer. My assistant is a wiz kid at figuring the best way to get it to you.

    Joe, you wouldn't believe it!

  14. An open letter to all would-be W-2 users:

It seems every time I mention W-2 I get a barrage of emails wanting it. This steel along with many others will soon be available through the NEW New Jersey Steel Baron. We are now tooling up and stocking a new warehouse. We will be stocking both carbon and stainless steels, and yes, we will have W-2.

After four years of relentlessly searching the best way to go and the people to make it so, we feel we have come up with a way to have it done. There will be round bar and flat bar available. Don't bother to call me on this (although I do love hearing from you all) as I assure you as soon as it is all available it will be announced on every forum, on every email that I have (send me one if you are not sure that I have your email), and hell, I'll be shouting it from the mountain tops.

There is still a lot of leg work to be done. I would like to hear from all of you about sizing and formulas. We've put together what we feel is a good solid base of steels to start with. We will be carrying in carbon steel 1075, 1084, 1086, 1086V, 5160, 52100 (flat bar), L-6, O-1, D-2, 5160, 15N20, A-2, and W-1. In stainless, we will be carrying CPM 3V, CPM S30V, CPM S35VN, 154CM, CPM 154CM, CPM D-2, CPM M4 and 440-C.

In the future, we'd like to hear from you and what you are looking for. This company was created to service all of you, and we will need your input to help us to run it properly. Our goal is to make sure you have the steels you need to create the knives you have in mind without concern as to the steel's quality -- Let us take care of that part. If you have questions or concerns we want to answer them for you. If you want to try something different, we'd like to be a part of it. We are here to serve.

(We are planning our grand opening for mid to late September. We will be announcing steels as they come into stock between then and now. This means that by September we should be fully stocked. If you need anything before then, drop me a line.)
