  1. An open letter to all would-be W-2 users:

It seems every time I mention W-2 I get a barrage of emails wanting it. This steel along with many others will soon be available through the NEW New Jersey Steel Baron. We are now tooling up and stocking a new warehouse. We will be stocking both carbon and stainless steels, and yes, we will have W-2.

After four years of relentlessly searching the best way to go and the people to make it so, we feel we have come up with a way to have it done. There will be round bar and flat bar available. Don't bother to call me on this (although I do love hearing from you all) as I assure you as soon as it is all available it will be announced on every forum, on every email that I have (send me one if you are not sure that I have your email), and hell, I'll be shouting it from the mountain tops.

There is still a lot of leg work to be done. I would like to hear from all of you about sizing and formulas. We've put together what we feel is a good solid base of steels to start with. We will be carrying in carbon steel 1075, 1084, 1086, 1086V, 5160, 52100 (flat bar), L-6, O-1, D-2, 5160, 15N20, A-2, and W-1. In stainless, we will be carrying CPM 3V, CPM S30V, CPM S35VN, 154CM, CPM 154CM, CPM D-2, CPM M4 and 440-C.

In the future, we'd like to hear from you and what you are looking for. This company was created to service all of you, and we will need your input to help us to run it properly. Our goal is to make sure you have the steels you need to create the knives you have in mind without concern as to the steel's quality -- Let us take care of that part. If you have questions or concerns we want to answer them for you. If you want to try something different, we'd like to be a part of it. We are here to serve.

(We are planning our grand opening for mid to late September. We will be announcing steels as they come into stock between then and now. This means that by September we should be fully stocked. If you need anything before then, drop me a line.)

  2. Kenon,

I like it a lot. Fast is the word that comes to mind when I look at it. It's nice to see you at it and trying different things. Congrats on your 1st integral. As always, I'd love to know what steel you used. I kind of twitch when it's not listed.

  6. Chris,

I do take PayPal. It does make life easy, as long as you don't have some kid in China breaking into your account and playing online video games with your money.

    Alan,

There was.027 Vanadium in the last load and there will be again in this one(+/-). In the 3 loads I've put out I've hit .67 Mang, .90 Mang, and the last batch was .80. Carbon from .82 to .89.

    Aldo

  7. The rolling date for the new batch of 1084 is August 8, 2009.I should receive delivery within 2 weeks of this date.

  8. To All,

It is at this time of year that I usually look to see if there is enough interest in ordering a load of 1084. It seems that 1/4 x 11/2 x 48 has been well received and this years load will be no different. I am looking to have some 1/4x1 made up but have not been able to find an American smelter who will roll it that small. It seem that they can't get enough rolled to realize a profit at the end of the day, so at the moment, 1/4 x 11/2 is the smallest size "Domestically Made 1084"

If you are interested in ANY AMOUNT what so ever please send me an E-Mail stating the amount you are looking for along with your full name, address and a phone # you can be reached at. I will return you a total amount + UPS costs. Please be sure to take only what you can handle financially. Because of the state of the economy I am able to hold the price at $4.00 per pound. If you order 200 lbs or more there will be a $.20 per pound discount. If you wish to get together with other smiths and have it sent to a central location the same rule applies.

Shipping will be UPS as always, but we've started using UPS PROOF shipping tubes.

1084 is an accumulative load. There is a smelt scheduled for the end of May. The Smelter needs a minimum amount of 50 tons before he'll turn on the furnaces(10% of which will be ours). If that amount is not met by the pour date they will bump it up approximately 5 weeks.

If the Smelt goes off in May shipping will probably start at the end of June. That date would, of course, be bumped up 5 weeks if the smelt is at the later date. If you plan on ordering please due so by the end of April. If you have any questions please send them along with your contact info.

    Thank you,

  9. I just found a load of O-1. The thicknesses are as follows: 1/8",9/64", 5/32", 3/16", 7/32", 1/4" and 9/32. All good sizes. I have a list of the entire inventory. There are a lot to choose from. This is all Precision Ground.

If you are interested please E- Mail me your Address and Phone #. I will send you a file of the whole list. I will try to keep as up to date as I can with it.

Pay special attention to the larger plates. There is some good pricing if you've got a saw. The smaller sizes are more costly because they can't produce the tonnage they need to make it worth there while so they raise the price until it is.

    Thanks,

    Aldo Bruno

  10. Ric,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. If you want the analysis, I can send you a copy or bring it to NY next month. I haven't finalized the paper work with the Mill Rep. When I do I will post all the particulars. The load did come out of a smelt of Fine Grain 1084 to which is added a small amount of Vanadium. In this case .026. When I saw it in the formula for the 1095, I didn't pay much attention to it, but apparently it's pretty potent stuff. I banged out a blade at Robert Eggerling this morning. I'll try and get it cleaned up over the weekend and post it at the beginning of the week.

    Christopher,

If a USPS shipping box is what you are referring to, I give you my permission to come over and use my saw. The steel is being shipped in 4 foot bars. They weigh a bit over 5 pounds each and sell for $3.85 per pound( $20.00 per bar). And last but not least, it is hot roll.(summer smelt and roll)

Hope that covers any Questions you have.

    Thank you,

    Aldo Bruno

  11. Got the delivery Friday afternoon. The specs. are as follows:

    Carbon - .82

    Mang. - .80

There is also Vanadium in this batch, much like the 1095. It is only .026, but it is enough so that the steel is designated 1084FG. It's kind of like 1084 on steroids and the grain should be like glass.

I'll be packaging this week.(All Week!) We will start shipping towards the end of next week. There is not very much left in this load. If you were planning to get it, get in touch with me at njsteelbaron@gmail.com .

    Thank you All,

    Aldo Bruno

  14. Hey Aldo I know this thread is for 1084, how ever I am looking for some 1050 or 1095 in the 3/16" thick to 1/4" thick and roughly about 3 inches wide and 12 to 18 inches long, I am not a big lover of 1084 to many issues with that pesky little alloy and heat treating.

    Any help would be great.

And I finally forged a nice Wakizashi from that round w-2 that Walter Sorrels and I bought from you. Wonderfull Hamon.

    John,

Good to hear from you. Yes, I've got 1060. It's 3/16" x 3 1/4" wide. How many thousand pounds were you looking for  Found a load that was suppose to go to a scissor company in New England that can be easily had. If anyone else is interested please let me know as well. I guess I should post it on a new thread

    Sam,

Yes, the load should arrive at my shop in mid August and I plan on bringing a bunch up with me. Of course, if you take me up on my offer and get your butt down to my shop like we spoke about you'll get to play with all the rest of the stuff I've got that much sooner! ;)

    Aldo Bruno

PS- John, send some pics of the sword. (And tell everyone where you got the steel!!)

  15. The cool thing about a future smelt is you can always smelt extra. I am still taking orders for 1/4" x 1 1/2" x 48" 1084. The steel is being rolled at the end of this month and there is still time to order, but the time draws near. If you are interested please contact me soon.

    I also have 3/8" x 1 5/8" 1095 FG in stock for immediate delivery.

Please DO NOT leave me a private message on this site. Contact me at njsteelbaron@gmail.com with your NAME, ADDRESS with ZIP and PHONE # and I'll get back to you.

    Thank you,
