  2. Hello everyone! Long time no see! I've still fowllowed the forum just posted much less... Here ya go! New style Little Giant, good working order, one set of flat narrow dies. On spring linking the foot pedal to the cluch has to be fixed or changed. A motor will have to be found as I'm keeping the actual one for a press. Bright yellow. 6000$ US, can be discussed. Buyer will manage and pay for shipping but of course I can give some help for transportation contacts. The hammer is located in Québec, Canada. Thank you.
  3. Jesus, I received a grant to make steel. Some of my expenses are paid, a sculpture will be the final result of the whole process. The difficulty is to find local bog ore... I found some for the next furnace, identified a mine too, have to localize it exactly. They do look good Alan! Should I roast bog ore? From the analysis that was made on it a century ago, local bog ore looks pretty clean. Gotta mix some clay now! Thank's
  4. Here are a few pictures of my last furnace. Probably because of a mistake in the clay mix, the furnace developped big cracks during the pre-heat. It gave me the opportunity to try a trick given to me by a french knifemaker to make the furnace leakless again: paint the furnace with lime. It worked very well sealing the furnace for the rest of the smelt. I could have simply use clay slip but I wanted to give it a try. It was not the best contructed furnace, but certainly the nicest looking one I've made! The ore was local black sand. Crumbly "granular" bloom high carbon. Thank's!!

  6. Smart set up Jesus! I remember the cast cement furnace you did a few years back. The addition of ceramic wool is a good idea, must make the top parts really light! I was about to built my next furnace today, I'll try it the sectionnal way. Thank you Jesus!

I got it from those guys half an hour from my place: Bellemare mineraux Of course it's in Québec, far from you.... shipping is always possible, but probably extremely expensive They were actually happy to sell me some, it seems it is not a very popular sandblast media in the area. I have the chemical composition somewhere in may emails, could find it if you want.
  8. Thank you, I've destroyed the furnace, crushed it and remixed it with clay. I should be smelting the black sand on sunday if weather allows.

  10. Thank you Jan, I did try without much hope. The hematite (of this quality, sandblast grit) naturally does not produce much slag. They are very fun, albeit a little tedious, to built, very organic.
  11. Been awhilwe! Lots of non related knife stuff got me away from the forge... Here's the bloom I did during a public demo I did last week. Like all public demos, I did not keep track very well of the process. I had help from a good friend who also did not note much of the smelt. I was quite nervous about this one as I did a lot of knew thigs. new construction, new charcoal, new tuyere. Having talked and seen Lee Sauder at Caniron IX was of great help, this guy is a smelting poet. Fast and "easy" smelt. Mybe 4 hours actual smelting. I used the usual hematite (enough new thing!!). The true revelation is the copper tuyere. Really, it is worth soo much more than the metal you pay! It is amazing! Not only it will last a long time, but as it does not melt, it leaves the interior of the furnace clean clean clean! That also means no slag to speak of; the ore is already very clean. Very high carbon bloom. Classic built, fun with the kids! The tuyere angle might have been a tad to much, so was the height. I brought the bloom right under the hammer. initial compaction went really well. The bloom broke clean in two parts, one solid the other more loose and "fluffy" Hot, poking at the loose part. One heat on the more solid piece. Cold. First compaction on the front. ¸The copper tuyer got nice coulors the day after. Impeccable! I picked a good quantity of iron sand and bog ore (found some Lee!). Those are next. Thank's!

  13. Hello, What do you guys use for air flow control? I use to just place a piece of plywood in front of the air intake of my squirrel cage blower, but now I've chaged blower, and it's not possible to do that anymore. Pictures welcome! Thank's, Antoine
