  1. hi guys, quick question. I am making an EDC out of 1084 from Jantz. I forge welded a length of chainsaw chain down both sides and then forged and ground to shape. heat treat was per Allen Longmire in the "heat treat by alloy" section. doing the final grinding I decided to do the "brass rod test" and my edge is soft. any idea where I might have gone wrong? I didn't burn the edge grinding, quench was in warm vegetable oil and I did three hours at 400 deg. for temper. any thoughts as to what went wrong would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Hey guys just finished this up and it is for sale! Blade:1084 hand rubbed finish Handle: desert ironwood burl and 6061 aluminum pins and tube Sheath: wicket and Craig leather sheath. Hand stitched, dyed, fully welted, and treats with sno-seal by yours truly. I'm asking SOLD. Feel free to ask me any questions!
  3. First commission! Woot! I was going to call it the Basilisk or some other such thing, but it was decided that it needed to lose a few inches in length, which resulted in more of a resemblance to a talon than anything else. Not complaining. Materials: Aldo's 1084, HRC ~62 Radius Emerald Camel Bone 3/32" stainless welding rod (had to post photos directly from computer, received a "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community" upon trying to post containing links from photobucket. Checked the image posting topic but didn't see anything new, has there been a recent change?)
  4. Probably should have looked to do this a while back, but haven't gotten around to it as I have quite a bit of leaf spring. I'm looking to buy some steel, something I can practice welding with and maybe give a bit of a hamon. After looking around a bit, I'm considering getting a bit of 1084. Is this my best option? Is there another steel that would bring out a good pattern with it? From what I've seen, NJ steel baron seems to be the best place to get it, and I'm astonished by the price. http://newjerseysteelbaron.com/shop/1084/ Thoughts and advice? Thank you all so much, Caleb.
