  1. I thought I'd jump up to the plate and post this as a beginner's challenge project along the lines of what was discussed in another thread. The blade is flat ground O-1 (use whatever tool steel you like) dropped point, has a partial tang and a frame handle design. The guard is a single branch copper design (use whatever guard material you like) has a stabilized wood and vulcanized paper spacer package with ironwood scales over a copper frame and copper pins. With all the materials, use whatever you like. This is not so much about duplicating the knife, but duplicating the knife making techniques. Ask any questions you like.
  2. So here are the results of the handle making demo from Saturday. There are two pieces for a BBQ set (Steak Flipper and Fork, Spatula coming soon) and two pieces for a fireplace set (Shovel and Poker, brush coming soon). I demonstrated partial tangs in a solid block of maple (burned in tang) for the BBQ set with domed pins and a frame handle with cocobolo scales and stainless frame and flush pins for the FP tools. The BBQ set has all 416 SS hardware, the Fireplace set has 416 SS guard and frame with a brass spacer. The BBQ pieces: The fireplace pieces: Close up of the BBQ handles: Two close ups of the FP set handles. The belly and back of the frame is rope file-work. Everything was done with the following power tools: Drill press, porta-bandsaw, angle grinder, Dremel tool, and a 6x48 belt sander with 9" disc (Harbor Freight special)
  3. On Jan. 16, 2016 I will be doing a handle making demo for the Arizona Artist Blacksmith Assoc. The event is at Desert Rat Forge in Cave Creek AZ and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Information can be found at the following link: http://azblacksmiths.org/cal-desertrat-20160116.htm The demo will cover two different handle styles: the partial tang in a solid block and a frame handle design. This is an all-day event.
