  1. Dear Hivemind, Please could those who know what they're doing have a look at this casting tree? I am going to be making 5 of these and casting them all in bronze via ceramic shell and gravity casting (Just pouring the stuff in and letting it fill the mould via gravity). I would just like to ask if anyone can see any glaring errors I've made before I waste a week's work and pour them! Thank you for any advice! James
  2. Dear Hivemind, I am soon to be casting a set of bronze pommels and crossguards. I am going to be using ceramic shell and lost wax to do this hopefully. As it happens I have a basic idea of what I need but as I have never made a refractory slurry before I don't know exactly what I need and in what ratios. I have been looking at sourcing raw materials and this is what I think from exhaustive googling that I might go for: https://www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=281 And https://www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=142 My question to the omniscient lot of you is... do I just mix these two together and bam, I have a refractory slurry, then each dip add fine sand, allow to dry, then repeat? Are these not ideal for small bronze castings? Is there something easier/cheaper/better? Thank you for any advice you can give! James
  3. Lately I've been processing last years leftover beeswax, and figured I'd like to tro lost wax casting. I have around 2 ounces of gold lying around, so why not make a bad ass ring ? My question is : can I make a wax mold covered with natural clay (it is blue when wet, don't know the name of it, just dug it up from the farm) burn out the wax and then pour in the gold ?
  4. Hi Folks, I'm looking for recommendations of books or PDFs about lost wax casting. I want to have a good overview before I start asking a bunch of questions. Thanks much, Carl
  5. So my wife found this video and sent me the link. This is a pretty cool backyard casting project and art form. He is using aluminum, but I don't see why you couldn't use other alloys. http://nerdist.com/pouring-molten-aluminum-into-water-balls-makes-instant-art/
  6. I have been working on a project that is without doubt my best work thus far (no spoilers yet!) but ran into a snag with casting the fittings. I already carved the wax, made a silicon mold of it and a few copies. That all went fine, and actually came out better than expected. However, after setting it in investment, the bronze well, failed miserably. I had a small sprue vent to help the air escape, and that filled about half way before a void the size of the thing I was casting formed between it and the top of the flask. Is this because the bronze was too cold? Or the mold not preheated enough? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully, I'll be able to give it another go this afternoon. Thanks John (Large cone part was the top of the mold, thin wiry thing the vent, and the bit on the end of it being the bottom part of what I was trying to cast)
  7. This weekend I did the first castings at my home foundry sinds I moved last year. I'd build a furnace a year ago, but hadn't gotten around to using that one yet. But I wanted to make a few products to sell (though fine with keeping them too )The results are an early khopesh (Egyptian sickle sword), winged axe (Dutch), duckbill battleaxe (Levant), and an early copper age axe-adze (Bulgaria). For the latter I'd molten 2kg pure copper, which is more then I've done before with this set up. My furnace in operation. Not easy bellowing and taking photos at the same time
  8. Hey y'all, Have any of you ever made a casting with a stone or metal inclusions protruding from the final piece? How would one go about this? I am thinking about casting tiger eye, agate, or what I think is lapis lazuli in silver. Do any of you know anything to help me? I have plenty of extra stones sitting around, so it's not a problem for me to experiment, I'm just worried about explosions, cracks, and that sort of stuff. I feel like different rocks will react different ways. Would casting in aluminum first be close enough? How about copper since it has a melting point closer to silver? Thanks Tim
  9. The title says it all. Does anyone have any leads on where I might be able to find small quantities of fine mesh silica sand or olivine sand for use in casting? I recently acquired some bentonite clay, but I can't find anyone who sells the sand to mix it with. Every distributor seems to have minimum orders of WAY more than I need. I read through this page but I can't find any bags of the concrete sand locally. That is a good size bag, but even still it would probably be more than I need. If anyone has any sources, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, John
  10. I'm getting into casting fittings for sheaths and blades and I just wanted to know where I can get some wax for carving and where I can find a recipe for casting sand. If anyone can help that would be great! P.S. I live in Colorado
  11. Let me preface this by saying that I have next to no idea what I am doing when it comes to casting. That being said, I delved into this wonderful art last week with the intent of learning enough to begin the fittings for the Claymore I am working on. At the end of the day, I poured the entire crucible's worth of refined aluminium into an attempt at water casting rig. This was the result. More on the experience here. For those of you out there, what might I be doing to make such unusually shaped 'ingots'? Is it a product of too much water in the bucket I pour it into, or something else entirely? I was operating on the fly using what I remember of Jim Kelso's presentation at Ashokan last fall. As far as I know, mostly copper is water cast. Could that be my issue? Anyway, here are a few pictures of the result. Thanks for looking, John
