I've got a tanto and a wakizashi nearing completion. Something that has given me a great deal of anxiety is signing them. I didn't sign any of my work until I got yelled at by a potter for being artistically irresponsible. No signatures means its impossible to trace what I made and when, which is a big deal for collectors. Not that my work's collectible, but if it ever becomes collectible, even long after I've passed, it matters.
The difficulty I'm having is that I speak no Japanese and I'm really really uncomfortable with signing my name in a Japanese script because of it. I've been tempted to use "TM me fecit anno MMXIV" (TM made me in the year 2014), because I've always thought it charming when that kind of thing shows up on Greek or Roman artefacts, but I don't know.
How would you guys approach signing such work?
