Just finished these off... shame I have no gas for my forge. Was keen to give these a try. They are bolted together right now but once I can light the forge I'll use the bolt as a rivet. Any feed back?

I am a blacksmith working at a local museum. I came across an old pair of tongs in their collection. The surface shows a little rust and lots of grain , typical of old wrought iron. It's clearly hand forged and massive. It's about 24 inches long overall. The bits are (each) one and a quarter inches square and about five inches long. It's clearly designed for holding flat stock . Can anyone suggest what these tongs were used for? Possible for heating the spine of a blade ??

Started making my first pair of tongs as my forge starts to come together. Took some 1/2" round stock from HD, and just winged it... Also forged a punch to go with them to make the holes for the pins... Coming together pretty well, looking forward to finishing them up next week...

I just finished my first pair of tongs today ! they are made from 2 rail road spikes and it took me about 5 hours of work to make them.(Don't worry I had the forge outside with a nice breeze). The joint where the two peices meet were not level so I had to file it down and I had to use a bolt as an impromptu rivet. This is my third day forging and I am definetly getting better at hammer control. Any advice would be much appreciated becuase I know a bit about bladesmithing and blacksmithing in theory but very little in practice. They are perfect for holding rail road spikes.
