My curiousity was piqued by reading about a 40 hour heat treat for INFI. I am wondering what goes on or could go on in such a regime. NB i am not asking what exactly they do to to INFI, but what sort of things heat treaters do or could do in theory if they had the time and the temperature control. Is there typically a very slow rise to temp? Or a long soak? Are there many cycles where the steel is brought up above critical and back down, normalising/refining grain? Is the 'quench' managed within the heat treat process, ie do they drop the temp quickly to harden and then austemper or martempering or both? Or is there still a somewhat traditional quench outside the oven and then back in for tempering?
