I thought I'd jump up to the plate and post this as a beginner's challenge project along the lines of what was discussed in another thread. The blade is flat ground O-1 (use whatever tool steel you like) dropped point, has a partial tang and a frame handle design. The guard is a single branch copper design (use whatever guard material you like) has a stabilized wood and vulcanized paper spacer package with ironwood scales over a copper frame and copper pins. With all the materials, use whatever you like. This is not so much about duplicating the knife, but duplicating the knife making techniques. Ask any questions you like.
I was looking around the forum and i see tons of talent in this place i'm starting to learn some new names cool inivative ideas and masterful craftsmanship, on the other side of things i see a lot of smiths that are "up and coming" new to the craft and some that are just having trouble trying to do too much work with not enough tools. On this i thought i'd pitch you guys the idea of a challenge board. some of the new guys can post things that can be like a monthly or weekly challenge for the newer guys depending on how its arranged. i was thinking a knife every month and maybe a different challenge each weak to incorperate into the design of said blade. thats just my take on the idea, but i'd really like to hear some thoughts and feedback on this. my main reason for pitching the idea is i know im all right as a knife maker, but i know with the right guidance i could be better, i think the same goes for alot of the guys i see on here who all seem to have a lot of the same questions as me. and just about everyone on the forum i've met seems to have one thing in common, the pursuit of knowledge and the will to but in the work to be better. if we could get a couple of more experienced guys to help us get a grasp on things we have a loose hold on, it would be great, if not then at least i tried. not only would i like to see myself grow as a blade junky but honestly im curious to see what kinda projects this could turn up if we have a group all trying to create a similar blade. i just think it would be a fun new board to check out every once in a while. I hope i can get some of you guys behind me on this one ~Steve the pirate
