matt venier
Here's a knife I made for a good friend who's getting deployed to Iraq next week. 1095 about 11.5" OAL full tang with black canvas micarta scales and tan paracord wrap and my second kydex sheath. The finish on the blade is what I call a tactical hamon which actually looks a lot darker in person. I did a bunch of testing on this blade before I finished it up so I know it's tough and can do the job. Let me know what you guys think This was the first knife I've done using stock removal, it was an interesting experience but it felt a little wrong not to hit it with a hammer! jake cleland
that is wicked cool - the blade finish looks lovely and the tan paracord over the black micarta is beautiful, almost looks like antique scrimmed ivory. my only 'criticism' (ha) would be that i think it may have looked better if the serrations went al the way from the ricasso to the yokote, but that's just me. great work, regardless, it looks like it'll perform admirably in the field, though i hope he doesn't need it to. matt venier
Thanks for the replies! Jake, I thought of that too but I kind of figured having some flat edged area might be useful for more mundane chores instead of having to use the point, so function won out on that one. Bryan Bondurant
Great Knife! I have been working with this general type design for some time, probably a hangover from American Tantos in the 80s. Im looking forward to hearing about your friends use of the knife in Iraq, things like whether he carried it 24/7 and what and when he used it for while there. Do you know if he has been involved in any Knife or Blade Training before he deployed or while in Theater? Few people spend more than five minutes thinking about using knives, kind of a shame but its a reality. If you click the link to Blade Train you will find a new site setup just for training issues. Your welcome to post any combat knife stories there or sell knives or whatever. Maybe we can get a review from your guy on his blade and post it there. James Helm
Nice rendition of a tactical knife, and fits the criteria more than many I see. I'm going to be making Kydex sheaths of similar design at some point. I know how I was thinking of making the slots, but would you mind me picking your brain for an explanation of how you actually did yours?
