another Kukri

Hey guys,

heres my latest kukri-like blade.

I was fiddling around with different designs, and settled on this one. Kinda like a regular kukri, but more agile?

I had an idea what I wanted for the handle, but in the end I just kinda sanded it , tested the grip, sanded it tested, ect, until I came up with what you see. really snug grip now. :)

In the future I will try water to quench to get a nicer hamon, but this was done in peanut oil. Not great, but I can live with it for now.

Now the hard part is trying to design a sheath/scabard for it. Any suggestions?

Anyway

1095

19.25" total length , 3/16" thick, 2" at its widest.

14" blade

POB 4" in front of handle

black micarta handle

weight 23 Oz.

may come in handy incase of zombie attack!:lol:

Thanks for lookin,

stick

Stick,

Looks to have some pretty serious bite. Is that a little apex at the sweet spot on the cutting edge? Looks pretty slick. I'm with you on the zombies ~Herb

Sweet chopper, that bugger looks serious! The fuller is a nice touch to a wicked blade. I love this type of knife, no fluff, all practical.

As far as a scabbard, look at some originals, always liked the wooden-core traditional type with a thin leather wrap.

That is epically awesome! It makes me want to go FIND zombies, not just wait for them to attack. That's a heck of a chopper, there

thanks for the compliments guys :)

neil gagnon, thanks man, I will try to take some more professional pics today so you all can see better detail. I found this new 3m sharpening paper I tried on this guy. I'm liking it until I find a stone combo to replace the paper with. Anyway the final grit was 180,000! HA ha ! I thought it was kinda rediculous, but I had to give it a shot. Now it has a nice mirror finish edge I would like you all to see better.

Herb K. thanks man. The sweetspot is actually about 2" behind the apex for more of a chopping cut, although I would like to make another one with it dead on the apex for more of a piercing effect.

GEzell, thankyou Sir for the suggestion. I'm torn between the traditionalwooden sheath you suggest, and something modern and tactical. I'm headed aver to the leather store to see what they got now. maybe that will help with my decision. yep this chopper is all business. I wanted something I could use,and not just have sitting around for display purposes ;)

Noah M Legel, thanks man glad you like it. you play COD 5 yet? if you finish the game you unlock Nazi Zombie mode. I get my zombie shredding therapy there. Best zombie game ever.

weyland-smith, Thanks for the compliment! That name sounds very familiar, are you in the bay area by any chance?

yeah I intend to make the traditional shape as well eventually, but its fun coming up with sleeker variations on the original.

Thanks again for all the positive comments guys! Hope you all areenjoying the weekend!

I'll try to get those pics up asap.

Yeah weyland, next time I'll take pics of the process so you can see the steps. Its pretty simple

really compared to the more complex blades you see the other guys here making.

Thanks again guys, I'm off to the workshop. :)

stick,

thats really nice.

I haven't even played cod 5 yet, I get it and my forge on the same day!!!

What stock did you start with (what size, I got lots of bars of 1" x 1.25" 1095). I don't think I can make one of those without welding some together first, which will be a challenge for me.

good work, any process pics would be great.

Hey Kevin,

Sounds like you will have a great day on your Bday! a little forgin, a little Cod,a little forgin!

I started with 2 1/2" x 3/16" flats stock from admiral steel. Might be easier to do the same , but you could probably forge one out of what you have just fine.

I didn't really take any progress pics of this one unfortunately. I'll be sure to do a step by step next time for you guys.

Thanks again, good luck on the game ;)

the best sheaths Ive seen for these are open on the top and most of the front of the sheath, so that whenn you draw the knife, you pull forward and up. Very nice shape, whats the handle material?

Thanks, I think your right on. I'm designing exactly that right now. I'ts going to be a little out of the ordinary, but I'm gonna try and make it work.

the handle is black linnen micarta. I have a block of it laying around so thats what I end up using. Works nice but sanding it is only second to fiberglass. Yech! ;)
