Jacob you are wanting steel that is not made anymore. If you want some pony up the money and have some made or you can buy it from Don Hanson, Hmm I thought I answered this already.

ok well i didnt know it wasnt made any more,...but then what happens when don runs out....no more blades of w2?//besides that is there any good steel i can get around town for a tanto?

When its out its out :(, i know it sucks. I am going to be getting some from don, if you are close to louisville or bloomington i will sell you some of what i get.

Other than that you can get spring steel from a spring shop or junk yard, that is easy to come across. Dont know if it would be good for a tanto as i have never made one.

Try 1050 -1056 -1075 -1095 there are plenty of mob's in the states doing this stuff and just about all take a great Hamon

for japanese blades , w2 is now made under the guise of tool steel it just thay have done away with the W1 W2 acronim there were just to many different companys giving it and other steel different names , you may find some steel mob that has off cuts etc scout around , or a company that has some left over from a job

If you have a local fastenal, you might be able to pick up some W1 (not W2) drill rod in managable sizes. But you and Jared ought to get together and have a break the big bars down day :) .

Take care, Craig

TROGDOR THE BURNINATOR!!

W-1 is easier to come by as it's available in drill rod.

W-2 is/was also available via Tremblay Tool Steel.

I'd gotten some from them as has Burt Foster. Burt said on having some samples of his tested that it seemed he got some from two different batches.

I've got some of it from Don as well, and just now starting to get around to using some.

I don't mean to contradict anyone, but as far as W2 not being made anymore, both Cincinnati Tool Steel (http://www.cintool.com/catalog/water_hardening.asp) and Diehl Steel (http://www.diehlsteel.com/w2.aspx) advertise it on their websites. And that's just in the first page of Google results. Is there some problem with W2 from those sources? Do they only sell massive quantities, or is there something wrong with the alloy proportions?

I'm not trying to start an argument; I'm just curious.

Hey Matt seems to me a friend tried to order some W2 from http://www.diehlsteel.com/w2.aspx but they did not have any nor did they for quite some time. Maybe some one can check and see if they have it in stock now?

The thing is I know Don has some good stuff and I am going to hoard as much as I can of it.

Over the last year I ended up getting 5 boxes from Don. It's great stuff. Don posted that he's looking into having a melt done which would be great for everyone.

Hello guys.

I just came into some W-2 that is in 2 1/8" round.

I can have it cut down the middle and shipped per usps flat rate of $130 for appx. 40 lbs. This would make it appx 1" in at its thickest in a half round shape. This may be easier to forge by hand for those of you who do not have a powerhammer or a press.

If you do not want it cut I can ship 40 lbs for $120 in a flat rate usps box.

If you use paypal please add $5.00 to the total. acct is dpknifemaker@aol.com

I have been looking for some W-2 in a smaller size and now I have found some. Email me if interested. When the order is placed it will take 4-5 working days before I can ship....just a heads up.

As far as "biscuits" of 1" x 2 1/8" rounds the guy wants to charge an extra $40 to cut. I am trying to chew him down. So lets see...........

Here are the pics of the steel
