holy cabin fever, batman!

Recommended Posts

well, i've been down in Puerto Rico helping out my girlfriend's family for a few months. and as great as it is, i haven't been able to forge.

so, i've been designing while i've been here.

a bear seax: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2gv54b5&s=5

a wolf seax and a turtle knife: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=25z7dhc&s=5

a design for what i hope to be a laptop case: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=sp7lur&s=5

another design for the laptop case: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=dpwae1&s=5

i want the laptop cases to be like the bags petr showed us a few months ago, but bigger. and not made of antler. haha

any suggestions for a beginner wood to start carving?

i like the designs, though on the bear seax i think the muzzle is a little too long and wolfish, and i'm not so keen on the way the spine of the handle drops between the guard and the bear - kinda looks like a bobble head; i'd be inclined to suggest the front shoulders of the bear, and then have a more gentle curve from there to the guard.

i've found walnut to be about the easiest wood to carve, though it's not too strong for three dimensional stuff. boxwood is much more rugged but still pretty forgiving to carve in terms of grain. do not go for wenge or purpleheart unless you want a world of hurt and really like sharpening tools...

Should the bear ever be created ... let me know?

I would like the first crack at buying it. LOL!

I think they all look great. I am interested to see what you had planned to do with the laptop cases. Can you sketch out a rough idea of what the product would look like? I would love to see the concept.

no problem, dude. I don't mind making 2 of them, and I need the practice. Haha

I'll post a rough draft for the case later tonight, to keep you posted!

edit: well, i tried sketching it out and it looked all craptastic, so i'm just going to show an example of what it would look like.

basically, like that, but with a carved wood front, and probably made of canvas.
