Trying a new way to apply Satanite for Japanses Style Blade

That's the one. Ted christened it "buffalo killer". Swore at me when it sold too, 'cause then he had to polish it for the new owner. There is a LOT of surface area on that one. Weighed just over 1300 grams. BIG sword. :D

It is a very cool sword, the center core stayed centered almost perfectly, and it is a choji hamon that is very deeply lobed. I don't remember the customer's name at the moment who owns it now. I would love to see it when it is finished, but quite possibly never will. I will never forget the original customer's name though.

Well if the customer wants a new blade forged I will document the progress. I actually need to buy the first two waterstones as I have worn them out so I hope I can make them last until I get some more money to order some more.

I appriciate all the input on this one as it has helped me alot

Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky. But Crom is your god, Crom and he lives in the earth. Once, giants lived in the Earth, Conan. And in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered. And the Earth shook. Fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters, but in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts.

"I wish to order a blade of X.XXmm thickness tapering to x.xx/xmm 4/5 of a gnat's ass from the so-and-so, and it must balance precisely at the whodathunkit." I just say "Yeah, good luck with that."

Tell them you'll sell them a bar of steel they can take to a machinist =P

Edgar That is funny however I will try to work with the customer on almost all of what they want. I guess I have not had that many orders for japanese style blades and I have no idea where my balance is in it. I will get it figured out so enough.

And thanks for the support.

John,

Great piece, looking good. As with others here I will take "Directed WorK" but really run from custom orders. Many things just don't flow in my hands and more importantly in my mind. If someone calls with specs that seem to follow my direction, then I will get the piece in the flow. Most of my works sells to my client list, folks that have bought in the past. When a piece is progressing I send them a update, first one with a deposit gets it.

When I get an email with two pages of specs and drawings I very politley explain how I work, and invite them to participate. If not; God Bless and I'll buy ya a beer.

***UPDATE***

Well I have been polishing on this blade for the last two days solid 9 hours each day. She is sharp and has a beautiful hamon, I am still worried about it though.

So here are some pictures of the blade both sdes are shown and it is the same polish on both sides.

So tell me what you think likes and dislikes?

Hey John, slow down dude, you are getting way too damn good to wayy to fast. I'm getting jealous. (you know I am kidding right)

I think it is great that you got the results you did because the "fire" side looks cool as hell and if it is something you can replicate on purpose then it would be a great "trademark" for you.

That is one cool blade dude. It is following suit with the others.

Keep it up dude.

Ok, stupid question time-

How does one determin what kind of design the hamon is going to give?

Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy.

I also like the kissaki hamon.

My life is like shaving with a razor sharp machete. It's a bit awkward and I feel a sting every now and then, but in the end I'm happy with the results.

Well Greg the smith determines the hamon, but some times the clay may not seat properly or the heat may not be hot enough, well there are several factors involved when it comes to heat treating with clay. As I continue to experiment, looking for better ways to apply the clay and make it solid before going into the heat.

So in short the smith does but fate makes the ultimate choice for us.

I've not done anything very detailed for request on a blade either.

Most I've had is usually pretty vague. A requested handle material, and maybe a type of knife.

Last ones were just the handle materials. Makes it nice.

Dunno that I'd wanna do anything extremely detailed in instructions =P

That blade is looking great.

Well i have had several people ask me to make a sword with certain specs and for the most part it is doable just have to pay attention to how I forge and try to forge a little bigger to allow for filing and material removal to get the blade to the desired size.

I hate it when I run out of polishing paper. Now I have to wait 12 or more hours to get back to work on it.

Don thanks. I am trying to make the best blades that I can. But the only way that is possible is by using the best steel and your W-2 is the best so far.

wooooooowww

okay.. i am going to go dump my stuff in the river now. what kind of oven do you have?! and what temperatures do you quench at, and in what? cause it looks like you NAILED it. wow. that is exactly the kind of thing i have been trying to get.. and each time i get crap. wow.. that is gorgeous.

so do you put any clay on the back? cause that is how i do my clay.. i do a line where i want the hamon to be (but where it never ends up) then teh ashi lines (that also never show up) then i spread a thin coat of clay from the spine down to the hamon line ridge. but if you are not putting any clay above that line.. hmmmm

i am very intrested to hear.. and where are pictures of that other knife?!

i am blown away

gorgious

thanks for showing!

Hamons are a painting; blades are a canvas, clay is my paint, fire is my brush. the problem is.. i am still painting like Pablo Picasso.
