Ally
I agree with everyone, this hamon is absolutely amazing. You might not like it when it gets that extra 'ghosting' inside the lobes, but those are the blades of yours I like the most! -Ally
John Smith
John I put a very thin layer of clay on the HA or the area to be the edge right up to the shinogi-ji. I then put a thicker layer from the shinogi to the mune, I try to keep it around an 1/8" thick some times a 1/4" thick. And yes the thin layer is to prevent vapor formation. It works really well. I put a few videos up on youtube called applying clay to the blade, so check them out. john are the parts of the blade not heavily coated for hamon lightly coated to promote quenching and reduce scale ?? i know traditional japanese blades not differentially heat treated are given a wash coat of clay to reduce vapor formation during water quench and offers some protection from scaling John W Smithwww.smith-forge.orgFire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky. John Smith
Ok here is the updated Wakizashin in Shira Saya. The wood is Alder which is a very good wood to work with. Carves real nice. If the blade looks cloudy it is the lighting at home and all the polishing marks seem to show up. I re-polished the blade again to just to make sure it was clean and crisp. I will be relisting this blade for sale. So here are some pictures of the blade in Shira Saya. As always comments are welcome. Kevin Colwell
John, I love the simple, subltle, and elegant package. Really artful. Thanks for showing. Japanese styles are not usually my favorite, but this is great. Kevin please visit my website http://www.professorsforge.com/ “Years ago I recognized my kinship with all living things, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on the earth. I said then and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it; while there is a criminal element, I am of it; while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.” E. V. RedNeckLeftie
That's a darn good blade, John--I'd jump all over it if I had display space left. I really need to clean my stainless wall-hangers out bad!! That W2 cranks a serious hamon, don't it? Thanks, Brian K.
