Dee, you are such a "Sandbagger". Coming off all modest and stuff, like your skills are off. Then you whip out stuff like this!!Nice package all around. It feels very complete as a unified concept, like most of your work I've seen thus far.

pretty much just like any other knife really.

the bronze was cast with an area that could accept the tang of the knife..

once cast, i clean it up and then the brazed with soft bronze to seal the handle.

then a pin was placed through the skull and the tang thats inside.

the good thing about this kind of construction is that you can make the blade first and then shape the wax model to the shape of the blades tang exactly.

which means that when it all comes out, you just need to clean it up and do a very slight amount of refining to get an exact fit on the piece.

:)

does that answer the question?

^_^

Yes, Dee. That answers my question perfectly.

Thanks! :D

Dee,

This is a rich one.

I really hope to see more work like this from you.

The thing I appreciate most is how you worked with the mouth piece of the scabbard. It makes all else complete in both fit, finish and theme. Hugs it all together.

I am curious to see what you would do with something incorporating the same richness in texture, detail and form but more abstract in style. Perhaps only a hint of something figurative?

Very evocative!

Thanks for showing,

Beautiful! Nothing I hate worse than dropping a knife after the thing's been polished. On the bright side, though, doing that sort of thing gives me a chance to practice my vocabulary. Words starting with F.

Impressive work, I particularly like the realization of the sheath, the leather texture, matching materials and bronze cast fittings.

The leather texure is natural?

Dee,

You knocked my eye's out with this one ;) Between this and Don's Seax I might never get my eyesight back right.

I'm really glad to see you back in full swing.

Mr Johnsson ~ classically speaking, when one challenges another, some form of glove is generally used.

:P

Mr Sorrells ~ yes, i think i managed to pluck a few choice words from the aethyr when i stabbed myself .. and then brought it all home in a crescendo of cursing and tantrum-esque stomping around.

MDF ~ no, the texture is not natural. it was placed there with burrs and stamps.

Dee

You are definitley the mistress of the understatement arent you.

How did you do the castings etc??

Remineds me of that famous sculptor who said all he does is get a chunk of marble and chops off everything that doesnt look like a david.

You have done it again you sneaky little bugger

A Classic Challenge!

From me?

Your request for a challenge feels like a challenge to me:

OK, the virtual glove is here by tossed at your feet!

Ha!

I challenge you to make a rich piece composed of abstract components.

Now I am waiting to hear your challenge to me :DB)

As the one challenged you get to pick your expression of choice and to decide wether demonstration shall be with a finished piece or through a sketch, exposed to peers here at the forum.

(I have a feeling I am going to get soo beaten up :D )

very well ...

though i will have to think long and hard with what you will have to come up with.

:D

ill clear some time and get back to you about it when ive thought of something suitably evil .. bwahahaa :)

Makes me not want to post My meager offerings!

i know how that feels ...

a lot of other makers on this forum make me feel like i should just keep my stuff to myself and hush up.

its all a learning experience ...

and its all perfectly valid.

i guess its all a matter of perspective :)
