Is that a hamon I see in the third photo down starting to come up?? I will have to say that the "silver" colour sections are the Fe/Ni meteoric material...Yeah....the Hada is funky but that is what I intended...I could be tried for war crimes if anyone knew what I did to that poor little faggot while I was welding it...

Looks good and now I am drooling

Feel beter and I am one happy camper...Can't wait until we can see the hada and hamon a bit better

Thanks John..we gots one that worked!!

Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky. But Crom is your god, Crom and he lives in the earth. Once, giants lived in the Earth, Conan. And in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered. And the Earth shook. Fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters, but in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts.

Hitatsura isn't a "bad thing" at all..especially when one considers that when I was welding up the faggot I was going for a "mix" and alternation of itame and mokume on the hada with a small amount of masame (welded on the bias) thrown in as well, just to make things more "interesting".. (I wonder what "Funky Chicken Hada" is in Kanji?? Is this it as I am not sure so ?? (My kanji isn't that great....) ファンキーチキン (my Greek, Arabic, Pashtu and Urdu is much better..considering I grew up speaking these as well as Saxony {Amish} German)

Spoke with our good Brother John this PM and he says this blade is bloodthirsty and SHARP already and is showing a lot of "silver" laminations...These SHOULD be the Fe/Ni meteoric/1045 laminate. Plus I dunno about the rest of you but if'n you look really REALLY close you will see "Layers within Layers" sorta thing...THis is going to be a very "interesting" hada in this blade

I am really jazzed about this all in all...

Can't wait until Bro. John posts more pics...

Well as Jim stated here are the pictures of the blade at 800 grit. Now mind you I had already had this blade on the waterstones up to 800 grit, the hybrid polish seems to bring out details.

Holy Poop! I am about as much of a Japanese sword expert as I am an erotic dancer, so my opinion is only based on aesthetics and understanding welding a little. Wow - that thing is beautiful. I am anxious to see how you fit it out. It is one of the most visually interesting and complex I have seen. I just really like it. Normally, I don't like when people cross a welded construction with a differential heat treat, but this is really powerful.

thanks very much for sharing the process and product (the whole process) with us.

Ok this is what would be referred to as an "abomination" as far as what the more "traditional" Japanese sword folks woud be referred to..OK I can live with that.

I welded up this faggot without telling our Dear Bro. John what is was exactly..other than saying it would be best to oil quench...He followed my advise and this is what he got..

Rest knowing that once I get the blade back into my ham handed hand I WILL be posting WIP photos as the work progresses///

More later as things transpire...

John,

that's really starting to show.... Cool....

Jim , do you remember what steel is in the wider and looks like solid light gray smoky colored stripe that is near the edge ?

there is lots of activity going on in this blade ... I like bucking tradition sometimes.... keeps us young and alive .biggrin.gif

That is one intense blade. Please tell me the fittings are going to be something crazy as well. Collectors and experts be damned, any smith would appreciate that steel.

Steel is my canvas, a hammer my brush.

Thanks guys this blade moved very easy under the hammer I had to really watch out for it. I had to again rethink my forging techniques, and how hard I hit the steel. The blade has 1 or two issues but nothing that can be seen by anyone else eye. Only the artist can see them. And maybe Jim. I was really worried that the hamon was not going to show up as well as it did. And the hada believe it or not but as i polished the blade the hada changed with it, as I removed steel. This blade has been a challenge for me.

I have the kissaki to finish up and the mune to polish and she is ready to ship. So by next Monday it should be in the mail to Jim.

This was a fantastic blade to forge and kind of a booger to polish with the different elements in it. As Jim called it an "abomination" and he was right.

Like I always say what is the good of a mind if you cant change it, that is a stunning "colab" blade and like in the axe that i made of re-inforced steel / rebar I love my "abomination" type stuff, going boldly where no man has gone before :P !!

Now the Mead drinking must commence to figure out how to do this asome blade justice!! Hats of to the master swordsmen!!!

Forgive the layman here, but JPH mentioned holding the metal rather than just the wood and I'm not sure what that means.

Is this the width of the tang? It looks a bit wider than what I normally see in pictures, so would it be like the sword version of a revolver handle, steel front and back strap with wood sides? I've always thought that would look very nice on a sword, and then it has me wondering if the exposed steel could be checkered in the same manner for grip.

This blade was to be a Chisa-Katana for my own collection and use...It is a real brute..then again..with me being the "dainty sort"...(Yeah right)....the nakago is rather heftty...1" full width and the Mune-Machi and the length is 12 1/8" long... THis is a BRUTE of a sword blade..

Now I hold a Go-dan rankng in Jigen Ryu.. and I have done some serious cutting with this blade (unmounted) and it is s real hard case cutter....and the blade's surface is pretty much unscathed...

The Hada shows great character however.. There is a small section of Ware in the Ha...it is just a few mm in length...(5 MM..if that) and it is "set back" from the cutting edge by 3 mms or so...by my measurements..

Now understandably,,I was a bit concerned about this.. but after doing as much cuting as I have been with this blade....it is of no concern as far as performance goes... It is Cosmetic ONLY...

THIS IS A BRUTE of a cutter.. I just don't know what I will do with it at this moment... With the meteoric iron and all..this IS a "one of a kind" blade..truly it is...
