Forrest
So, I got hold of this lovely piece of marbled Eucalyptus burl that measures 2" x 2" x 10" and plan to cut it into pieces 1" x 2" x 5". The wood has lines on 2 opposite sides and lovely little rings on the others (sorry, can't think of anything more technical to call them ), so if I were to use this as handle material (which I plan to) should I cut it so the lines or the rings are on the side of the handle? Rings Lines Should I cut like this... (with rings on the side) Or like this?... (with lines on the side) Thank you Josh Forrest Persistence is to the character of man as carbon is to steel. A Bodley
If you aren't sure why not cut it in two 5" blocks then cut one with teh rings one with the lines? My tupence Andrew
Gyuri
I'm not much of an expert of this, but as I recall, those rings are called "eye" in english terminology, and add a great deal to the appearance of whatever wooden object. If I were you, I would definitely put those eyes to the sides, but you should go after your own aesthetics IMHO. And make shure you post the results! Forrest
Have been searching around and have found a few stunning knives with burl handles, it seems that having the 'eyes' (thanks Gyuri) on the side is the done thing. So I shal do the same as it looks awesome . I will be sure to share results, when I finally get around to finishing a knife.. Oh, the lines are called Rays. And you will have both on your handle. If you put the eyes on the side you will have rays on the top of the handle and if you put the rays on the side you will have eyes on the top. Its all good. Its just a matter of taste and the knife its going on. Very nice wood you have there. Hey, that didn't sound right. Lets try, Nice burl you have there. That's better. Have fun.
