Alan Longmire
Owen's right, those little Fetter Lane beasties look like they could crawl right up your arm! This thing's getting even more mythic in proportion with every picture.
Greg Thomas Obach
i remember something in du Chaillu's book about a seax that had a snake on it... and that it would climb out when using the sword.. " Dalla said: ‘He will lend thee the sword, though he will not yield readily (at once).’ Kormak did not think it was fair if he withheld not the sword from her, but did from him. . . . A few (lays later she told Kormak to go to Reykjar, as Skeggi would now lend him the sword; Kormak found him and asked for Sköfnung. ‘The management of it may seem difficult to thee,’ said Skeggi; ‘a bag (covering) follows it (goes with it) and thou shall leave it quiet; the sun must not shine on the upper guard, nor shall thou draw it except thou preparest for fight; but, if thou comest to the fighting-place, sit alone, and there draw it. Hold up the blade and blow on it; then a small snake will creep from under the guard; incline the blade, and make it easy for it (the snake) to creep back under the guard.’ Kormak said: ‘Many things do you the wizards use?’ Skeggi replied: ‘This, however, will help thee fully.’ After this, Kormak rode home and told his mother what had happened; and said that her will had much power over Skeggi; showed her the sword, and tried to draw it: but it would not leave the scabbard. Dolla said: ‘Too self-willed art thou, kinsman.’ Kormak put his feet on the guard, and tore off the bag; Sköfnung howled at this, but could not be drawn from the scabbard." well... it came from here http://www.vaidilute.com/books/chaillu/chaillu-1-30.html thought it was interesting to read... by the way ... Petr Florianek
carved other side so frontal bolster is almost done, did some drawing for pommel contest for worst photo ever (the line where leather overlaps is not tha bad, its not glue and i will make it less visible) GULLINBURSTI
Doug Lester
I'd say that the camera's exposure meter read the darker handle and the background, over exposing the white. Maybe bracket the exposure on the next try or play with it in your processing program. That's going to be an interesting wee beastie on the pommell. Can't wait to see it finished. Honestly, Petr, I'd be extatic if I could do the level of carving that you're not happy with. Doug Lester HELP...I'm a twenty year old trapped in the body of an old man!!! Petr Florianek
Hello! i managed to carve both sides of pommel and clean a rivet block. Now the sax has 6 snakes and 6 dragons carved. i think its enough :-) Now i have to glue it and rivet and it will be done. However, i would like to ask Owen few question, Owen, can you chime in? Then to scabbard. All comments and opinions and critique welcomed! owen bush
petr its looking great. I think the tang is in normalised state and certainly not quenched (hardened). I did not sharpen the blade before I sent it to you . I have always up to now assembled blades and then done a visible final sharpen on them . I like this as it gives a real sense that the blade was made to be used .However I have had some negative comments on this and am in a bit of a dilemma as to what I should do . I should have little problem re etching the blade post assembly if need be (I have done this before using bees wax to cover the bolster. but It could be a good idea for me to do the final assembly having re cleaned up the blade and re etched . what do you think ? forging soul in to steel owenbush.co.uk
Petr Florianek
I think that reetching could be done by few minutes with brush, so i would not be afraid and i would go with wax cover on bolster. I would like to assemble i by myself, as it helps me to make sheath for it and i want to do my part in whole.. I am happy you are satisfied and thanks for info on tang, its longer than i need so i can make a test od hardnes with file or such GULLINBURSTI
Jacques Delfosse
very wel done, Petr! I have a few questions for you and Owen: * does it come anything more on the leather from your handle? * Owen , could we see the seax in Gembloux ? Petr Florianek
OK. so Heptisax is finished. I must say that it was joy to work on such a beautifull blade. I will have make a scabbard now, so the project is not over. My friend will do leather work for me on this one, as i hate stiching and i dont have large piece of leather. I will make metalwork on it. I am very happy that Owen asked me to do this collab and i hope its not the last one Anyway: ple let me know what you think here are pictures GULLINBURSTI
