ryanwrath
1. this is my "anvil" ........and my favorite beater next pic is my brick forge i was going to mortar it all together, but i like being able to reconfigure it easily , i have another burner i can use for longer stuff, the burners are not mine, they are from larry zoeller, the "z"burner. everything else i figured out, it was quite a journey in and of itself, but i didnt blow up the house and it works super well, i can just about smelt iron in it in about 5-10 mins, reheat time seems quick, but not sure what "quick" is for the more experienced smiths out there 2. darthdave22
Looks good to me! I started out the same way. As a matter of fact I'm not too far ahead of you I still use pliers. I haven't gotten around to making any tongs yet. The important thing to remember is that everything you do is a learning experience! Enjoy it. Pat B
Just a word of caution with those fire bricks, being porous they tend to suck moisture up and if heated too fast with the burner can explode on you or crack.. be careful with them and pay close attention to humidity and such when using that sort of setup. Might I recommend making it a tad taller and lining it with kaowool. Bob Ouellette
Nice little set up. If you don't mind, I suggest a lighter hammer. It'll save your arm and joints. Alan Longmire
I'll second the lighter hammer, and also suggest you resize your pics to no wider than about 800 pixels, please.
ryanwrath
GAH my sincere appologies Alan about pic size i thought i was doing it right. good to know about the bricks exploding .>thank you and yes, ill 3rd that about a lighter hammer LMAO. i am a big dude and used to brutally hard work all day but ill tell ya i was LIMP after pounding out the half round file. one thing i do like about the bricks though is the flat bottom.........it seems like if a knife has a slight curv in it i put it on the bottom, let er rip and it just flattens out all on its own. ryanwrath
oh yeah my "lighter beater" got turned into a practice tomohawk........now i gotta go buy another one > you cant really see it but its sitting ontop of the anvil. if its not welded down and i know its not mild steel around the house its been forged................ Bob Ouellette
Get a good cross peen if you can. By good, I mean one with a relatively wide peen. It will allow you to direct where the metal will go more easily. And really try to get that anvil secured to the stump somehow. You will be amazed as how much effort you put into bouncing it around as you hammer Bob O "When I raise my flashing sword, and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will take vengeance upon mine enemies, and I will repay those who haze me. Alan Longmire
Thanks, Ryan! Our server is not too expensive, but it does have a cutoff after which it gets picky about things. Luckily Dave takes care of that when it happens! Note to all: Thank Dave Stephens for keeping the site running smoothly! I just keep the spammers at bay as best I can, Dave handles the business end these days.
