Jim Kelso
Here is a contemporary take on a kozuka with kogatana by Kiyoshi Kato, from 1999. This was back when I was casting and the kozuka is in cast Sterling. Peach is inlaid copper with gold fusion overlay. Toad belly is lightly gold plated. Saya in sand-blasted Wenge with a Mammoth throat bit and Ebony cover. Oh yeah, the theme is an allusion to the figure of Gama-Sennin, or "Toad-Immortal". Sennin are mythical Japanese figures around which there are many legends. Gama-Sennin often is accompanied by a three legged toad and he also carries the Peach of Immortality. In this case, the toad has been separated from the Sennin and is reaching for the peach. From a painting by one of my favorites, Soga Shohaku. Mike Blue
That is a good one. There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. Jim Kelso
I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you take up casting again every now and then. Thanks very much guys. Craig, I still will cast a piece occasionally as it's sometimes the best way to get what you're after. My work these days has a lot to do with the colors available in the Japanese alloys and it's usually makes more sense to carve or forge the bits out.
