Is Micarta dishwasher safe?

Hey all,

The title pretty much asks it all. So do you think it is? I'm wondering because I'm thinking of putting some homemade paper micarta on some kitchen knives. I'd hate to find out that the resine is leaking some chemicals all over the other dishes.

Micarta- yes. Home made- maybe. Experiment.

Dish washers are bad for knives no matter what they're made from.

Whether it harms the materials or not, it'll always harm the edge.

Can always resharpen them more, but I just give them a quick rub down with soap and wipe them dry and lay aside.

I agree, but the kitchen knife is for my soon to be sister-in-law and I'm not sure if she will take the time to wipe them down instead of putting them into the dish washer.

Ive put micarta handled knives Ive made through the dishwasher a couple of times, even though I try and use 'best practice' attaching the handle slabs (decent epoxy, pins and liners) Ive had them lift off a bit. Dishwashers get pretty hot when they are drying !

The bolts are a good idea; your choice of epoxy is also important. Not only can the heat effect the epoxy but some don't stand up well to water. Acraglass is one that has the reputation of being water proof.

if your worried about heat dont use epoxy... use JB Weld or Acraglass... needs much more heat than a dishwasher to make that stuff unbond.

Is there any commercial store that carries Acraglas? Or do you have to order it online?

or would it be smarter to use the corby bolts and forget the epoxy altogether?

Google "Brownell's" for the Acraglas, it's made for bedding rifle actions. As far as the corby bolts go, use them plus epoxy plus a vulcanized spacer. Try to remove as many of the opportunities for things to go wrong as you can. And don't clean surfaces with acetone, use sandpaper. One other thing I'm doing now is using epoxy from a carbon fiber supplier, not from a hardware store, even though it takes at least a day to set up and a bit more to fully cure.

You can usually find Accraglas at any outdoor sports store or gun shop. It's expensive and messy, it can be left its natural tan color or dyed brown or black (dye is included in the box), and it holds like nobody's business. Be sure to use the release compound on anything you don't want permanently stuck! It won't stick to petroleum jelly either, so I use that as a sort of damming compound to keep the Accraglas where I want it. It's pretty runny when fresh.
