jake cleland
so with all the playing about i've been doing lately, a couple of deadlines have been creeping up on me. first on the books is a big bowie/camp knife type thing: here it is ground and clayed up: and with the bark knocked off after the oil quench; you can just about make out the hamon: today i got it ground to finished dimensions at 80 grit, and am working on the habaki. more pics to follow... tsterling
Lovely lines, Jake! Waiting to see this bad boy finished. Looking at your handle and habaki raises the question of how you go about making these angled habaki (still a deep, dark mystery to me) and get the excellent fit between the blade, habaki and handle. How about a WIP on those things? On my knees........ Tom SterlingTom's Instagram Tom's FacebookSterling Sculptures Web Site

Don Abbott
"Camp knife" seems like such a common name for something so graceful. I look forward to seeing this one finished.
jake cleland
got the habaki and guard made - sorry no pics of the process Tom, but its just 1.2mm copper sheet cold forged round the tang, with a thick hamachi brazed in place. on this one i left a fair bit of play top to bottom, and then drove in a tapered shim and soldered it in place for a perfect fit. then i slotted the guard, and soldered it to the habaki with soft solder paste, so they are a single unit. i've also split, morticed, glued, pinned and rough shaped the handle. it's made from london plane, which will get stained. plane isn't much to look at, but i like it for morticed handles because it forms a really strong glue joint even on small areas. jake cleland
thanks everyone. Kevin, the steel is 3/16ths 1095 from Aldo. the hamon doesn't pop too much cause it was tempered pretty hot - 475f i think, and cause it's too big for my ferric jar. Kevin Colwell
yeah, that is pretty hot for 1095. I get better hamon results with vinegar or lemon juice than ferric, anyway. Mike Johnston
What bladesmith has money? I like to use 4" PVC pipe caped on one end for my etching and neutralizing tanks, mounted on a board (wonder where I got that idea, Wayne). Cheap and you can make them any length.
