Any of you younger guys playing Skyrim? There are a lot of different edged weapons in the game; some practical and obviously based on historical blades, some pretty wild, but all in all, there are a lot of blades in there that could easily be reproduced. (Somebody at Bethesda must be an edged weapon enthusiast)

My favorite is the one they call the "Nightingale Blade" (couldn't find any high-res pics of it to show here). It would take some work, but it could be reproduced, and it doesn't really have that "Fantasy-Blade" look to it. Just looks like a high-end, well decorated sword.

Yeah. If he's playing on a computer, he can drop it on a table, then hit the Tilde (~) key and type in TFC, then hit enter. This takes the view away from the players eyes basically (it means "toggle free camera") and allows you to get a really close view of it. (if he's playing on a console, he can't do it)

The roundel/guard is formed from the Nightingale's wings spread forward and nearly touching. Kind of hard to see it unless you can get an upclose view of it, but I thought in real life, that would be a pretty cool decorative idea.

Ive been wanting to try that game. Already playing the new star wars game and it has me wanting to build a lightsaber.

Skyrim looks like a good one. Nice to see some realistic weapons as well.

He's on an xbox 360. It is a nice design.

I think you'll like it Beau. I'm too spastic to run the controls on the 360 (but I'm trying), but I watch Sam play quite a bit. Cool game.

My son bought this game and has been having fun with it. While doing an internet search for him, related to the game, I ran across video of covers of some of the songs from the game. She does such a good job that I felt compelled to share here. Now, there are two more covers of songs from the game by her.

Links to the other two. I guess I am only allowed one video per post.

Edited because I had to figure out how to embed the video.

I do too. It has some Fantasy elements in it, obviously, but its heavily based on Norse mythology. I'm running it on the computer, and according to my Steam account, I've played 151 hours since 11/11/11, when it was released.

I played it through without any cheats the first time, now I've started over using several "Mods" from the modding community. Bethesda is supposed to be releasing two expansion packs in the coming months, which will make what is an already huge game even bigger. Bethesda is pretty good about that sort of thing, I think there were four expansions released for the last "Fallout" game.

Edit: That girl is pretty good Bruce. Somebody made a live action trailer for the game using her cover song.

yeah the game is completely nordic themed. I find myself playing and stopping in front of a wall in an ancient nordic tomb to check out the great knotwork the guys put into a statue or carving on something. Its as good as any nordic art book I've ever picked up to just wander around and check out for inspiration.

It's pretty sweet. A lot of the scenery reminds me of my childhood home. My favorite weapon appearance wise is the plain old Iron Sword. It just looks gritty and nearly like an accurate Viking Age sword. I just need to get my smithing skill high enough to improve one of those to an insane level. Enough nerd rambling :P

That's the best thing about this game, and the Fallout games. You don't even have to actually play the game. You can wander around freely, wherever you want, and either postpone, or totally ignore the story line. Of course, wandering around in those tombs admiring the artwork usually entails killing Draugrs before they kill you... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draugr

Yeah, that's another thing about the game. You can mine for different ores, smelt the ores into differing ingots, tan the pelts of the animals you kill, then smith your own weapons and armor with the ingots and leather. The more stuff you "smith", the higher your skill level gets, which means that you can create better and better weapons as the game progresses.

Between the Norse theme, the ore gathering, smelting, and smithing, it almost makes you wonder if someone on this forum works for Bethesda... ;)

this is the only game that i have considered buying an Xbox for

Why? Looks better on a computer, if your computer can handle it.

Someone once wrote me to tell me that they had used one of my knives as inspiration for a video game design, but I never followed up to see which game it was...

You know, I had a bunch of friends who got married, had kids, and the only way for me to hang out with them was to play Warcraft. I got really good at smithing and mining and was making bank selling über-epic crafted gear. Then one day I was like HOLY &*^% I could be good at this in real life! I cancelled my account and told my friends to call if they wanted to do something IRL.

I've never played Warcraft, or any of the other online games; never did interest me. Never even played D&D when I was a kid and everybody I knew was playing it. I have heard that they are attempting to adapt Skyrim for online gaming, but if they do, I won't be playing it online either.

My take on games like this, and the Fallout series is basically that of a "playable movie", and that's how I treat them.

Some people get into that whole online culture thing, and if that's what they like, more power to them. My "online culture" consists of this forum, a couple of Philosophy-based forums, and Facebook.

You have no idea how happy that makes me! I was actually sort of the same way, now that I think about it. Games can be fun, but nothing beats the actual feel of a hammer and the fire of a forge B)

i actually wanted to ask if this billow/rope setup would actually work and if it was based on anything historical

That billow with the rope looks like an old-fashioned jacuzzi. Or maybe it's an early Nordic bidet? The tsuba on the katana-like weapon is really really unappealing.

Here's one that I actually just picked up on my second play through (first one ended exactly 2 months after the game came out, 11/11/11 - 1/11/12) that I was just thinking last night would make a pretty cool weapon in real life:

It kind of has an osoraku tanto shape to it, with obviously a different style of handle (handle reminds me of the short swords from the movie 300).

LOL!!!!!

Let not the swords of good and free men be reforged into plowshares, but may they rest in a place of honor; ready, well oiled and God willing unused. For if the price of peace becomes licking the boots of tyrants, then "To Arms!" I say, and may the fortunes of war smile upon patriots

Ive actually been considering using the "ancient Nord" weapons as a template for making some axes or maybe a sword.

Also thinking of making the weapons from the Inheritance book series.

And others, maybe selling to cosplayers with a rebated edge?
