18k Gold at Rockwell C 69?

Saw this today and thought folks might find it interesting:

Wonder if it would hold a nice edge? (Just what we need -- a blade material that's much more expensive than good tool steel!)

Don't they make carbide cutters with a tin binder...seems like the route taken here is to use the born carbide as the frame and fill the building with, well...any lower melting alloy.

The application here is watch cases with the approved 18K stamp, but one could use this as a carrier for any of a number of alloys.

 

Not sure it will catch on in many areas, but it does make one dream of the next evolution of the technology of composites.
