Luke_Sorensen
Hello all I am wanting to do a leather wrap handle on a knife. I have made paracord wrap handles before. So I was wondering is the actual process of wrapping the handle the same with leather as with paracord? What is the best leather to use for this type of wrapping? And how would one go about sealing such a creation? Thanks in advance. Best Regards Luke S http://luketheviking.mymiddleearth.com/
Dan Scott
I just did a leather wrap on a steak knife for a customer a while ago (didn't seal the wrap, as it had to be food safe). I did the wrap in the same fashion I do paracord wraps, and used leather bootlace (it's square in cross section). To seal it, epoxy works well, same method as sealing paracord with epoxy, except you might have to use two coats of epoxy (or sometimes three). I also use small applications of superglue wherever I tie off the wrap to seal the knot before I epoxy the rest of the leather. Of course, sealing leather wraps turns the wrap into the same plastic chunk sealing an epoxy wrap with epoxy does, so it kind of loses the 'authentic feel' if that's what you're after. If you want it to be a bit stiffer before you seal it, you could soak the leather cord then do the wrap, though I haven't tested that. Good luck! -Dan Corvus Forge

John Page
I've only done a few, and I used bootlaces on all accounts. The way I did it, I used the mass of the lace to sort of build up the handle a little so it is not as flat. I left it unsealed, merely for the feel of the leather, and since it's a bootlace, I assume it already has something done to it chemically to help it in its intended use (or maybe not...). I tied it such that it does not need to be tied off externally, removing the need for glue entirely. In a sort of morbid comparison, it's like tying a noose around the handle of the knife, so the only thing that shows in the end is the wrap itself. If that makes no sense at all, and you are interested, I can try and explain it better. Good luck John Not all those who wander are lost. -J.R.R.
