Mr. Toad's grumpy day

Recommended Posts

Toad, where's the toad? I finally spotted it. You just gave me an idea with this post. My nickname in Nam was Sgt Frog. I was always croaking......... :D

We're glad you didn't make the ultimate croak!

Is katakiri basically drawing an image without using a clean outline, instead using different shaped cuts to build up the image?

Sam, you've pretty much nailed it. More to follow but some info HERE

Still working on the patina, but it's coming nicely. Iron with belly in pure silver nunome-zogan(koftgari).

Better pics of the whole object soon.

It must be challenging to blend the coloration of those two metals.

Not so bad Jesus. I wasn't concerned to keep the silver pristine as I wanted it fairly dark anyway, so I just went ahead with the iron patina first. It did turn the silver yellowish. I used liver of sulphur to further darken the silver and will further polish it back a little when the iron is done.

Jim, your work is inspiring; I always look forward to new projects from you. It isn't something that I have the patience to do myself (patience has always been the bane of my existence ;)) but I sure like watching other people do this sort of thing, especially you.

Edit: I guess that makes me a voyeur in a way ;). Metal pornography...

Thanks very much George.

The object is a chasaji (tea scoop) in pure iron with the silver nunome belly.

The smaller image shows up about life size on my browser(115 mm/ 4.5")

It's really frustrating photographing katakiri-bori as the real beauty is revealed as you move the work around in the light, which plays on the engraved cuts.
