Dark elf blade

Recommended Posts

i've decided to join, but not actually join. I really like the theme of this kith and i've sen some awesome knives so far. so, I am making a blade along the theme of the kith, just as if i was in the kith, but since it's only my third forged knife, i wont actually send it to anyone (copied from the main kith thread)

My idea it to make a small belt knife that would be carried by a dark elf somewhere deep within the forest. I think i'm going to call it Shadow Fiend and I'll come up with a cool story later.

So anyway, i went outside and cleared the two foot snow drifts from around my forge, then got to work. it's forged out of an old leaf spring and since its an evil blade, I triple normalized it pointing SOUTH rather than north.

Here it is fresh out of the forge

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/VENCajtpkWX1f6AfHm_glTzZzPpGCPo03ffSZRYcb3U?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-gDsRbaNsRRM/Ty3FROnKq2I/AAAAAAAAAFg/Tlqc5apAXWA/s800/IMG_1324.JPG" height="600" width="800" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/114927411968380410671/Pictures?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCLyP5rqppqXFhwE&feat=embedwebsite">Pictures</a></td></tr></table>

I'm going to straighten out the tang, i didn't notice how much it was off, until i pulled it out of the forge.

And here it is rough ground, tomorrow i will straighten the tang and HT

thanks Troy, i think i'm going to use some sort of dark wood for the handle, i have some really dark rosewood, and some black palm, but i might just have to buy some bog oak. I'm trying to get the feel that this knife is used deep in the Mirkwood, where no light has ever reached the forrest floor.

After straightening The tang, I got the crazy idea that i might be able to get a hamon, i've heard that 5160 is not a good steel for hamons, but it cant hurt to try. So, i clayed up the blade with some mud around my forge then quenched in vegetable oil, heres some pics

Claying up the blade

Cool. I have heard that about 5160 not getting good hamons. But I get them quite a bit especially with larger blades. Can't wait to see it finished. B)

I've finished the grinding, made a habaki, and started fitting the guard. now it's just filing, polishing, and guard fitting. I'll take some pictures of the blade, habaki, and guard over the weekend. But, i finally finished the design for the handle, and i have a picture of that!

(bottom knife)

well, i finally got some work done, the habaki is finished, the guard is etching, and the blade is at 400 grit.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/DTcKxKjHMefk0HAjdQ-I9TzZzPpGCPo03ffSZRYcb3U?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-kyIM8rvQgO4/T0GNXuB27HI/AAAAAAAAAG0/QxcaacXf4i8/s800/IMG_1378.JPG" height="600" width="800" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/114927411968380410671/Pictures?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCLyP5rqppqXFhwE&feat=embedwebsite">Pictures</a></td></tr></table>

I couldn't get a picture of the habaki before it got dark, but i do have some pictures of the possible wood for the handle.

First is some Guatemalan Mora

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wzBB69wlS3z67n94ZEUqsjzZzPpGCPo03ffSZRYcb3U?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fsr7tN84Tag/T0GNR2X5c2I/AAAAAAAAAGs/kh-OgGmH8ng/s800/IMG_1386.JPG" height="600" width="800" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/114927411968380410671/Pictures?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCLyP5rqppqXFhwE&feat=embedwebsite">Pictures</a></td></tr></table>

And my choice, some rosewood

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ubSrGYdx4cJDI9iqwIx0gTzZzPpGCPo03ffSZRYcb3U?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HlNr_lYSDmY/T0GNirPqVTI/AAAAAAAAAG8/5zETCGgAdEU/s800/IMG_1388.JPG" height="600" width="800" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/114927411968380410671/Pictures?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCLyP5rqppqXFhwE&feat=embedwebsite">Pictures</a></td></tr></table>

Also, I'm going to antique the blade, will gun blue work?

Tomorrow i will start work on the handle.

Thats a cool knife jake!

I blued the blade and fitted the habaki. Sorry for the awful photo.

In the light, it has a light gray hue, but in the shadows, it turns pitch black, living up to it's name quite well.

Here are some better pics:

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/npinuE3ZVlxHpX5zVlM1ZjzZzPpGCPo03ffSZRYcb3U?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1RIvGjLnILc/T0KAPfzcfUI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/aKH3ZXvVD2A/s800/IMG_1402.JPG" height="600" width="800" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/114927411968380410671/Pictures?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCLyP5rqppqXFhwE&feat=embedwebsite">Pictures</a></td></tr></table>

That little ding on the top corner of the habaki is really annoying me, but oh well, i'll try and file it down later

So with this much progress, why not enter it? I'd be happy to get it, if that's how the trade goes down. The whole point of these is to get a mix of work, and nobody gets bent out of shape to get a beginner's work. Often it can lead to an interesting mentor relationship with a more experienced smith.

I agree! You should definitely enter if you finish in time. Looking good, can't wait to see where it goes B)
