If you are in don't make the mistake I made in the last one.

I kept waiting to see my name added to the list and then when I spoke up found it was my own fault for not adding it,

I was out of time to start and complete KITH 2011.

ANYONE can copy the latest list of those in, add yourself to the end and post the updated list back to this thread.

Then lets see you work! :D

Put me in Coach!

I have a blank all forged for a baeurnwehr, ground, heat treated. I am taking some artistic liberty, so it has monosteel low manganese 1075 blade with a hamon. whomever gets it will hopefully like hamons. This one should be a really cool one. It looks promising. I still have to make a side knife and a 2-tined fork to go with, and finish them all. But, I have BEGUN.

Here - just so y'all don't think I am lying:

the blade is low manganese 1075, it will have a nice hamon (I think). I am going with nickel silver bolsters fore and aft, and a steel nagel with leaf pattern filed on it. I hope to do the thing where a tail coming off of the nagel is used as one of the handle pins, so that the nagel has more support.

It has a really complex distal taper. Thickest at bolster, tapers towards point and towards heel. But, the last quarter towards the point I let it thicken again for a more reinforced tip. Some of these even have, "armor piercing," tips. I went against that since this was more of a bauernwerh to accompany a hunting party or use in defense (sort of a poor man's hanger or hunting sword only a little shorter).

tapered tang, although I doubt that was traditional. Just sort of habit.

I can either go with black horn handle scales on the set, or with curly oak (I got some really nice oak with a cool curl to it).

If I hurried I could maybe order some stag slabs???

suggestions are good. (if I should move this to another place and post it as a wip, just let me know).

I'm psyched that this is growing so fast! Mods, any chance of making a subforum for KITH 2012?

I'm new to knifemaking, as well as the forum, but I have been tinkering and experimenting on my own. I think I may actually be able to do something here. I've been inspired. Would everybody mind if I joined, and tried my hand at this?

Go for it. I might be jumping in myself, if I can afford the time investment.

Kevin you should bring this blade to Kerry's hammer in. I would love to see/hold it.

If you are interested I might have some large pieces of white tail antler that could be split down the center and used as slabs.

Let me know if your interested. I'll dig them up and bring them with me.

ok, I will bring it, but it will be in a rough state. I won't have much chance to work on it. I will have it and a couple of sword blades. Only one of the blades is, "finished." the others are in process.

You know a blade in the rough state is easier to study.

Its great to see and hold a really tight piece of finished work but its a lot harder to see how the maker got there.

I look forward to it.

Are you interested in that piece of antler?

Link to post

yeah, sure. I haven't used antler since I was a kid and found my own on our farm.

You will see where I am trying to still make some decisions about which way to go with one of the sword blades, re: ridge or not. Daos don't always have them, but I LIKE them, and tend to use them to keep my lines right. Then, the question is always whether to erase it or emphasize it. You can't do it halfway. It has to be bold or gone.

see you there.
