hi all,

this bowie was built on order along the lines of an earlier bowie,

but reduced to black: steel, iron and ebony

 

some specs:

W1 forged , differentially hardened

wrought iron

ebony

 

total: 36cm

blade only: 21,5cm

tapered from 6,0mm to 2,0mm

studtype-sheath

That is fantastic. I especially like the union and flow of the guard and bolster into the handle. Just excellent.

I agree with everyone else, that is an elegant knife. inspirational, in terms of flow and fit.

I have a question, if you don't mind (you were nice enough to explain your meticulous fitting technique with the dental paper once) - how did you finish the wrought iron? What did you do to polish it and then to etch/color it, if anything?

 

It has a natural, aged iron look but was recently formed, so I am curious how you got that appearance.

I work with the wrought like this:

forged, then ground with a belt,

then I carve the form,the curves and the surface-structure with a dremel and rotating inserts like these:

then a short ´polish´ with a rotating wire-brush (inserted in the dremel)- it cleans the worst unevenness, finally stained-

thats it.

I didn´t etch that one- the wrought comes from sweden and seems to be a top-quality.

I tried to etch, but there appears nearly no structure- it´s to clean.:-(

if you build your version, then I`ll try to make my interpretation! :-)))

Having seen one before that is now in my folder of "KNIVES TO ONE DAY BE GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE" I am once again amazed at the level of craftsmanship - that bolster still amazes me - maybe one day you will share the secret?
