Stéphane A.
And because this whole project is about learning and challenging techniques and artistic skills, I will try to cast some parts in brass. I had the idea to make it first with antler but had not enough material to make two. A wolf head first carved in wax and hopefully cast with success in delft clay. A ring will be attached in the wolf mouth. I roughly cut the shape with a swiss knife, then continued with my usual carving chisels. This wax is a pleasure to carve My link
Greg Thomas Obach
that came out very nicely will you have pic's of the casting apparatus very cool wip North Shore Forge & Ironworks
Stéphane A.
Yes I have Greg This is my first attempt with the Delft clay method. I like the texture of this oiled sand. It compresses easely and leaves a surprising fine finish on the cast piece. One of the advantage with this method is the fast realisation of the mold. You re-use the same wax model and you can try again within minutes. I had to make only three attempts to understand where and how big the vents should be. The result is not too bad. I am now carving and sanding the fittings Edited July 16, 2012 by Stéphane A. My link

MikeDT
Wow - the project just keeps getting better and it started out amazing! The casting turned out great. What did you use to hold the clay? It looks like two pieces of pipe.

Stéphane A.
Little or rather big step forward on this project. I carved all brass fittings and patinated them with ammoniac. It took me more than twenty hours counting the design choice and adaptation, carvings, patina and other adjustments. Rings on wolf heads are now brazed. My skills with dremel improved a lot ( easy when you start from zero ) it feels like a pen now and I can imagine many many use for future projects. I have to finish the wood and dye it a little to match the handle colour. Some more finish and it will be finished soon. oh and thanks a lot for having pinned this thread Edited July 29, 2012 by Stéphane A. Stéphane A.
This project is now finished Thank you very much to everyone for your comments and good words. It was very motivating and gave me a lot of energy to finish this langsax. As you can imagine, it was a very very rich experience. I learned a lot and discovered new techniques which will be used in my futures projects. It is when you push your limits that success is the most rewarding. I'm not afraid of words, I am very proud of this work. A lot more can be learned and this is great My mind is already wandering on some other projects. Maybe not as ambitious but putting into practice what I've learned so far. (probably with smoldering facial hair smell) After around 120hours of work, here is the result. Do not hesitate to get inspiration from it or just copy if you like. Better pictures will be taken soon probably Thank you forum fellows and firey hairy faced friends Stéphane My link

Stéphane A.
Thank you Petr Yes it did help A LOT ! To be honest, without what you showed me, I never thought a dremel could be such a dream to use. I bought the real stuff with a flexible and it feels just like a pencil. Even to carve in brass By the way, the diamond files work perfectly with brass. All the best my friend Stéph My link
Kevin Colwell
great work - brave to try the casting, too. I am going to try the etching tomorrow. thanks for the inspiration. kc please visit my website http://www.professorsforge.com/ “Years ago I recognized my kinship with all living things, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on the earth.
