NEW Student work for 2012!!

Wow! This year just flew by! In any case, the new work from my students is starting to trickle in.

The first of these projects is one from Julia Zell. Julia is a most impressive craftsman. She chose this integrally forged damascus piece with Ironwood scales,decorative pins and some tasteful filework, Blade,5", OAL 10" steel, 1084, 15N20. The steel is without flaw and very well done. The blade is cleanly executed with a nice hollow grind and very crisp planes. The whole design hangs together very well and for all the right reasons...And I might add, this is her first attempt at knifemaking! A very solid effort!

Check back over the next couple of weeks for further submissions, There will be some good ones for sure!!

i might add, that the part that was added, could have and should have been ommitted for the sake of others feelings. lol

That should be taken as encouragement...that such things are indeed possible. Try and remember, these young people represent the best art students from MA. and around the world. I'm priveleged to teach them to be sure. Attending this art college is like attending a music conservatory that trains and instructs musicians for careers in the symphonic organizations of the world and other high level performance venues. Hence, it should come as no surprise that they consistently turn in the kind of work you see me present. They arrive here well prepared to take on tough and challenging work.

great work, great teaching... love that stuff. I like the touch of the blackened area on the bolster. It gives it the look of the traditional 3-piece japanese assembly. Sort of.

Wow and Holy Crap! Very nice work, thanks for posting what your students make. It must give you a real sense of satisfaction to be involved in something like that.

i was joking...i didnt really mean you should have ommitted it...i was poking fun at the fact that 99.9% of us wished their first knife was that nice...maybe i should have been more clear.

You have a great formula: Teach in a place that delivers the most talented artistic minds, give them the best instruction with the best equipment, and watch what they do.

 

It's no wonder that your student work constantly amazes.

Thanks Everyone!

These replies have been making me blush. Working with JD has been an incredible experience and we students at MassArt are very lucky to have him. I'm glad I still have a couple more years to work with him and hopefully produce more projects like this one!
