First hamon

This is my first attempt at a hamon. W1 steel, about 10", I ordered some 1500 gritt silicon carbide that should be here next week. This is sanded to 1000 gritt, etched and polished with flitz. I'm pretty stoked how it came out, I think it will get better with the silicone carbide. Any advice or critique welcome.

UCody may I ask what you used for the insulating material? Can't wait to see the finished knife!

Wow I just learned something about the use of a product ! I guess you can teach an Ol Dawg new tricks I will be doing this on my next Blade .

Thats a awesome blade, and nice Hamon especially first try. Try different etches and see what works best..sometimes one will give you all the wisps and detail on the transition line the others wont.

 

 

Was it a water quench or Parks/oil?

Nice hamon, nice plunge cut, nice lines on the blade!

careful, hamons have a way of grabbing you. I meant to just play with making a hamon on one blade as a diversion from pattern welding about 3 years ago. I have spent most of the time since practicing ways to make hamons better with heat treatment, clay layouts, and most especially, polishing.

 

It is a new bug, that is just as bad as the original bladesmithing one...
