They are a crazy looking bird...During the day they sit still on a branch with their eyes closed and are so hard to make out even when you know exactly where they are. Just look like a stick.

Hey Brian I have often wondered just how bad a skunk can really smell....are they really that bad??

If I'm right, they're not related to owls at all, but are in the whippoorwill/nighthawk family. The American versions look pretty similar (if you ever see one up close, which is extremely rare), just smaller and darker. I saw a rescued chick once. We were trying to figure out what it was, since it looked sort of like a swallow but had the very tiniest of beaks. When it opened its mouth, you could see that the beak is just the tip. The whole darned head opens up, a full 180 degrees! If that critter does the same I can see why it's called a frogmouth.

And personally, I don't mind skunk, as long as it's not on me. Ever open a hoppy lager (like Heineken) in a green bottle that's been in the sun too long? That sharp sulfur/grassy smell is methyl mercaptan, the same thing that skunks produce. Just imagine it being about a million times stronger if one actually sprays you or your house, though!

When I worked in EMS I transported a couple skunk hits that triggered severe asthma attacks. Both times we had to put the rig out of service, go home change and shower. It took a couple days to get the unit air out and back in service. And that was not even a direct spray, just the fall out from the patient that was hit. Very bad stuff.

Skunks are bad for farm animals and pets, also can be harmful to humans. They are very resilient and carry a lot of diseases and parasites, kind of like rats.

I don't mind the smell in small amounts, but a few weeks ago I had to air my house out after something got sprayed nearby. This one skunk has been digging in all the yards for grubs. This thing is voracious. Since it arrived, I've noticed my cats are getting big dog tics and fleas, but I dosed them and their favorite areas with a good amount of borax..

Yes they are that bad !!

Your eyes burn, you can hardly breathe, and you wanna puke !!!

no fun on a hound pup training expedition and of course before you can stop them they jump one ten feet upwind of you and then try to rub the spray off of themselves on you and anything they can..!! Then to top it off the wife insists that you sleep in the garage for a few days :wacko:/>

HAHAH wow those skunks sound terrible but if I ever come to America I think I will have to source one to see for myself .....it was kind of like being tazered...I knew it would hurt but just had to know....well anyhow I am sounding like a weirdo so I will stop there.

Hey Alan...you are dead right about the frogmouth not being owls and their whole head does open right up!! Here is a juvenile brown tree snake... Just a mildly venomous..
