Not sure what kind, but i cut it off a tree here in S.W. florida. It's aprox 1 foot square and has a very fine grain.

How do you season the wood Fred?

It sat for 2 years in my garage with the bark on it! As soon as I get it cut up to see what it looks like, I'll polish up some and post more (better) pictures.

Man! This is gorgeous grained wood. Is it just me or is it chatoyant?

Wes, this stuff looks better than the pictures could show, they were taken with my cell phone!

Wow Fred looks sort of like swirling flames. Love the burl!

Hoy, no don`t have eirher of those down here! too hot for them (sub-tropical) but I`ve got some real nice Florida mahogany drying in my shed that a guy gave me when he was removing a large old tree from his from yard! can`t wait to cut that stuff up! I`m not sure what this is , the tree is about 40 ft tall and smooth barked (the bark peals off in sheets real easy, kind of a messy tree really) any of you florida guys got any idea? I will try to get a photo of it if I can.

Thanks for looking ,

Fred

Maybe a gumbo limbo or a melaleuca? I wouldn't think either of those would have that nice of a burl though.

Here is a pic of a red gum tree on my back yard. Blokes make fruit bowls out of them I should cut one off but I am afraid of heights

I suggest making handle slabs out of the burl rather than blocks. I think you will get more overall usage out of slabs. Unless you never make anything full-tang, and you don't like mortised tang constructions (route out channel in two halves and glue together with wood glue - it is the way I do almost all handles).

very cool looking stuff.

can't wait to see it on a knife with good pics.
