My version of Keyes-style burner

<p>It worked! This is the &quot;final&quot; configuration for my new forge. I started with Geoff Keyes' posting on care and feeding of blown burners and kept puttering until I got the temp range I want (1250F-2350F) with a nice smooth burn! I'm sure the squirrel cage fan is not really pumping 180CFM against the back-pressure even at full speed - but it's just right to top out where I want (2350F). I'd tried a 1-1/2" pipe first but it could get too hot for my insulation (rated to 2400F) and couldn't hold low enough for heat treatment w/out back-burn or flame-out. 1" pipe works just right for this forge!</p>

I hope the notations are self-explanatory - - - I suppose I should add that the final 1" Connector is there to act both as a "bell" and to fill up the hole in the in the forge insulation. I want to be able to dismantle the forge and take it to hammer-ins - hence the modular, not-all-welded-up construction.</p>

This whole post is behaving weirdly. I have to chuckle at the "Keyes style" burner. I'm famous! Truly, my contribution to the burner is the "elbow". The rest comes from other people, notably Don Fogg.

 

We see farther because we're standing on the shoulders of giants.

Sorry to worry the details, but "Safety Third" (to borrow a phrase from Dirty Jobs).

 

I suggest caution in mounting your regulator that close to the forge. Regulators have a safety relief valve in case of pressure regulation problems in the main diaphragm. Though it is a rare event, they can pop prematurely or due to an actual catastrophic failure in the regulator and fully vent the inlet gas, bad news to say the least. They also manage less catastrophic problems, such as rust or other particulates from the gas tank or line getting lodged in the regulator diaphragm or main regulating valve and preventing it from closing far enough to maintain output settings. Outlet pressures are corrected by venting the generally small exess flow permitted by the particulate. Though not as dramatic as a full vent, this is still potentially a very bad day if the regulator vents near an ignition source, or into an enclosed space containing an ignition source.

 

It is also a very real possibility! :excl:

 

My propane tank (120 gal) is located just outside my shop and the regulator is installed between the tank and the main gas line entering the shop. A non-opening window allows me to directly observe the forge when fine tuning gas pressure. I noticed some odd dips in the pressure as I adjusted gas flow while working on my KITH project last week, so I started spritzing my gas lines with soapy water. No leaks at the forge or along gas lines until I got back to the regulator itself which was actively venting propane gas. It wasn't a strong enough flow to hiss, but it blew bubbles like a carnival clown. Since the leak is relatively minor and even more importantly, located outdoors, I went ahead and finished the heat treatment on my KITH axe before shutting everything down. Now I need to figure out how to service or replace my regulator, but at least I still have my shop... :excl:

OK, I gotta say it...for a blown forge, maximum efficiency goes to the ribbon burner. Having used one for the past 10+ yrs, and having tried every burner under the sun, nothing compares to a ribbon burner for even heat and control.

To my friend Michael, take a wkend and come to the shop and try mine. I'll even buy the scotch!

I understand even heat and control, but how are you measuring efficiency? All of the ribbon burners I've worked with have been fuel hungry, IMHO. I'd love to be able to put a metric to "efficiency", but short of weighing the tank at the start and finish (hard to do with my 120 gallon tank), I have not been able to come up with a way.

 

I'm not saying that your ribbon burner is not the best thing ever, but I'm still asking the question.
